I asked whether Harpoon could be launched from VLS and now I have the answer. Would there be any benefits, apart from some deck space saved (no dedicated launchers?
Regards,
P
I suppose, but dont really know, that if the Harpoon was shifted to the launcher it would free up space for another weapons system eg CIWS, this would depend on the ship involved and wether there was topweight available for more systems. The fact that no one has bothered with it suggests it is not worth losing other anti air- missile capacity in the launcher to make way for it.
Mk41 and harpoon
Minor piece of information Logan, the Mk.41 can fire the Harpoon according to a Boeing feasibility study ,but a fully integrated firing system has not been developed. The first user prepared to pay the costs will get this feature plus future royalties but so far no takers.
Was the A-10 ever offered for export?
Strange as it may seem the A10 was one of the planes offered up in the competition to replace the Mirage 3 for the RAAF back in the early 1980s. The comp was won by the FA/18 Hornet from a large number of rivals including the F16,F15,M2K etc.,hard to work out what it was doing in that company for the job at hand ,but it is true.
I both like and agree with the way that you think!
I am sure that this added capability of this āF-35Dā variant would be well received by other air forces ā say Israel, UK, for starters and hay maybe even the USAF

Nothing wrong with the idea of a customised JSF for OZ in theory except that our procurement methods are moving well away from “Australianised” solutions because of problems with a number of “it seemed like a great idea at the time” procurements. The still unoperational & vastly expensive Seasprite project that is still not yet operational comes to mind .The vastly more expensive Collins Class submarine is another one but after many years & mega extra bucks they at least now have a fine sub. There have been others . The decision to go for the more or less OTS F100 AWD in preference to the more powerful G&C conceptual AWD is an example of the way we are headed. The “safe” selection of the Super Hornet as an interim fighter bomber is probably not a perfect example but gives us a view of the way we are heading. to be fair I should point out that there have also been quite a number of successful defence procurements as well.Anyhow it does not hurt to discuss different hypothetical ideas in fact it can be good fun.
Cheers- tiddles
The CEAFAR phased array radar solution was selected for the Sea 1448 Phase2b upgrade and should be entering production in 2008, though no contract for that announced yet. The inclusion of the CEA systems on the AWD would go against the drive for existing/proven solutions and require re-design work on F-100. Plus contracts have already been signed for the US-supplied AEGIS componenents.
You sure the AWD is to be built in Spain? The LHDs yes, but ASC got the whole steelwork for the destroyers, though they are going to distribute a lot of the work out to local engineering and shipbuilding by the looks of it.
At this stage the hulls of the LHDs are to be built in Spain & they will be fitted out in Australia.
Mirage 3 losses
With regard to the Mirage 3 in RAAF service -Of the 115 delivered 40 were lost due to flying accidents etc. ,engine problems accounted for 13 of these losses. At the time of the RAAF contest the F16 A/B were also having some troubles with the F100 engine, this however was not the overall reason for its failure to get the contract ,the FA 18 was a unanimous selection being seen as best able to meet RAAF criteria at the time. Several other planes not previously mentioned were considered
Tornado – The version available at the time was the swing wing primarily A2G model that had a basic self defence capacity, even though it was a reasonable performer it would have just duplicated the F 111.
F-18L aka YF-17 – Too risky as the RAAF may have been the only operator & despite outward similarities was a different beast to the FA 18 & could not have piggy backed onto USN upgrades. The plane itself performed excellently in trials.
F 14 – At the time the USN was still having teething troubles with the plane , it did at least share the same TF30 motor as the F111, in the end it was seen as too big and complicated for the jod required by the RAAF.
It should be mentioned that many of the contestants eventually developed into excellent aircraft however at the time the radars ,weapons systems ,avionics in general were seen as behind that offered by the latest US Models. It could be said that the same applies today. [running for cover]
Hornet Upgrade
The possibilities I could think of would be:
Chile – an upgrade for their F-5s, to keep them up to date, to work alongside their new F-16s.
India – either Air Force (maybe for Tejas, or for Mirage or Mig upgrades, or the Indian Navy, for the Sea Harriers?)
Singapore – either for their F-16s or for F-5s.
Maybe Australia could look at getting some, as part of the Hornet upgrades? :diablo:
No news of AESA as part of the Hornet Upgrade out here, in fact the upgrade from APG-65 to APG-73 was only completed in 2003. The F 111s are to be phased out soon & the SHBk2s already come equiped with AESA. I hope it is not for the Tejas or the thing may never ever get finished!!
They are excellent drawing, I had used them as a help when I was building my 1:72 derivative of the Otago.
There are at least two people I knowe of that are building 1:72 RNZN OPVs, Otago and Wellington. There are 1:72 plans available, as is the hull and much of the superstructure and fittings, but for the purposes of this exercise the link by Tiddles is fine for most of what people on this board need.

Here is a link to some very basic drawings of the ben-my-chree ,the ferry that the MRV is based on.

invincible
I read in a mag [somewhere?] some time ago that the Invincible would end up at the breakers because the stressed steel [again I think] construction meant it was just about out of life & unsuitable for sale unlike some of the older RN Carriers which seem to have just about lasted forever.Sorry but I cant remember the source. [or a lot of things these days] so I could stand to be easily corrected on this matter.

It remains to be seen if New Zealand’s non-combatant emphasis in defense procurement is the right choice. At this point, it appears to be a safe gamble.
The so called “MRV” does have more than a few advantages over requisitioned Ro-Ro ferry, mainly in terms of ready availability, but it is wrong to think of it as an amphibious ship, or even as a conventional naval vessel.
I am fascincated by the “Project Protector” ships, and would be very interested in drawings or plans of Canterbury or Atago.

Waiting for Godot whoops!!Gorshkov
So, by the time the Carrier works up and enters full service. The USS Gerald R Ford and the Queen Elizabeth will be close to entering service also…….
I was thinking the same thing, be prepared for more delays. The GRF & QE could be well & truly up & going before the Indians get to sea [If ever]

mrv 7500
[QUOTE=Unicorn;1145435]The model is of HDW’s MRV 7500. It was a downsizing of HDW’s original MRV10000 which was a candidate in several competitons involving NATO members.
A surf across to Google (for MRV 7500) will turn up stuff, including a thread here on Key
Hi Unicorn , Thanks for the info, I did some surfing and am now embarrased to admit I had seen it before in Armada. Ah well I suppose thats why it looked a bit familiar.:o š® š®

Couldabeen Selected
In the interests of keeping the thread going, here are two model shots.
One is of Canterbury as she will be, the other as she could have been (if another design had been chosen).
Unicorn
Hi Unicorn , Do you pls. have any info.& or specs. on the unselected MRV model in your thumbnail or is it a modellers conceptual idea. I followed the MRV selection up to a point, but found it hard to get info on some of the original cantidates at the time.

ix-514
Hi Ya , Here is a pic of the IX-514 that you posted some years ago , it is a long way removed from the BPC-140
BPC-140
I have found it hard to get info on this ship, here are a couple of links with a bit on them, but also need translating for non french speakers.
