Now imagine that the cheetah can see you a hell of a lot better than you can see it. If you don’t see the cheetah until he’s ten feet away you’re screwed.

Not quite.. keeping with the same analogy.. cheetah will almost 90% of the time close in to almost grab distance.. its with in this range that Gazelle has to make its sudden one two , step to one side jump to other move and hope cheetah overshoots… otherwise its dinner.

That said i agree that if gazelle picks up cheetah at distance greater than 300m (cheetah unlike lion needs only to be with in 300m to pounce) then it will get away , or even mock the predator.

But as ive said in the bottom of the post… its better to be cheetah and not be the one dodging BVR missile, even if you are capable of doing so… and nobody in their right mind will dispute that stealth and superior sensor package is great advantage. Agility helps get away and turn tables on enemy.. stealth and detectiing other guy first, makes you predator … now predator WITH agility 😎

He better have his IFF on and squwak on both Mil and Civ frequencies .. especially if flying over any USN Aegis ships, or if he gets to Japan over Koala :diablo:

Back to the topic i think we can see a pretty deacent paralel in nature, with cheetah and Tommy Gazelle … Cheetah has top speed of 110Km/H, tommy is caped at 70km/h .. in a drag race tommy looses 100% of the time. But tommy has few tricks up it sleave.. agility.. it will time series of sharp turns just right to dodge predator and get away.. turn to early and cheetah will cut corner and follow and you die, dodge to late and cheetah will stretch mid air and lay claw on you (proximity fuse 😀 ) … turn has to be just right.

Success rate of Cheetah against younger tommies is about 70-80%… success against experienced healthy one is 40%… so even with healthy experienced gazelle far more agile than cheetah.. its still lunch half of the time.

Point of the story… Be a Cheetah Not a Gazelle if you can help it. :diablo:

Interesting thing will be once we enter age of UCAVs designed for air supperiority. With pilot out of the picture the G UCAV can pull are limited by its agility and the limit on the airframe. With in 50 years designers will have to make BVR missile that can hit something pulling 10+ G series of turns… 😮
Or will highly agile UCAVs make missile obsolite.. and we will be back to the dog fight age where next Von Richtofen and Immelmans will be high speed procesors 😎

U.S. Vice Adm. Bill Gortney told reporters that it is difficult to identify pirates, and the potential for killing innocent civilians “cannot be overestimated.”

Load of crock, there are well known pirate home ports in puntland which house only pirates or their support structure … USN just does not wish to get involved in this trivial task, after all its not Navy who should deal like futile things as piracy on the seas.. we need those Aircraft carriers for club Med cruises .. Let airforce deal with pirates, they got F22s :D:D:D

Russia is still very powerful. Still have huge stockpiles of nukes and Nuclear submarines. And can choke Europe by turning off the gas and launching an offensive in winter.

why are we discussing this… it will NEVER happen .. Russia has no intention intervening anywhere past its own backyard.. and as we saw in Georgia NATO will not get involved past some “strong language”

Precision guided cruise missiles and Ballistic missiles need no Air Superiority. 😉

So what if they are less capable than those on F35.. F22 is in service, F35 is still not.. difference in time when F35 enters service fully will be 5-10 years.. in 5-10 years computing technology generally doubles in preformance… so why would it be a shock if processors on f35 are more advanced.. Still does not mean that total computing power on F35 is superior..

Saying “lets not go into discussion about how likely such scenario is” .. proves you know your entire argument is flawed. Had mod thought any such conflict is even a remote posibility they would not make such decision.

Fact is there will be NO falklands 2, due to political situation in Argentina AND abysmal state of Arg Military.. airforce in particular.

Fact other than falklands there is not a single location where i could imagine your scenario taking place.

So your whole argument is akin to saying.. lets imagine Klingons attack RN from the air…

Please, i cant say i think decision to scrap harriers is one i would do, but its not the pending doom that people here make it out to be.
