    AI Equipped Blenheims

A quote from ‘Osprey Combat Units 5- Blenheim Units of WW2’ by Jon Lake:

“On 17th July 1939 a secret minute called for 21 Blenheim 1F’s to be equipped with radar, and equipment was rushed to the RAE from the Pye and Metrovick factories. The radar was installed at the RAE, and deliveries of the AI equipped Blenheim 1Fs to No 25 Sqn began on 31 July 1939. Some 15 AI- equipped aircraft were on charge by the time war broke out.”

    Hope this helps…

    Collections..

The pride of my collection is my group of drawing office documents concerning the Gladiator, HP400 and original blueprints for the Gnu and Grasshopper. All with original design notes. During my next week off work in March I shall be making a trip to Hendon to see if they are interested. Far too good to be kept where they are now, under my bed! My 150 BoB signatures are pretty close to my heart too, but they are going nowhere.

    Wrecks etc

Branching away from the treatment of remains etc, my father works for the MOD and visits various bases, belonging both to the Army and to the RAF. He always comes back with an interesting tale or two. One of the bases on his ‘patch’ is North Luffenham. He related to me that on his first visit a few years ago he was told that there were aircraft buried all over the airfield after the war. I have no idea what they are or if its true, but thought it may be of some interest.

    All the best,

    Speke

The Merchant Shipping Fighter Unit was based there. One of my grandma’s neighbours served with the unit. He once told me a story that I always remained a little sceptical of, can anyone confirm it? Here goes.. It was whilst working on an aircraft one day that a DH Rapide touched down at Speke rather heavily, bursting a tyre. The occupants jumped onto the apron and were quickly identified as Bob Hope and an actress of the time. Hope went off to entertain the mess whilst my grandma’s friend was detailed to carry out repairs. When the repairs were finished, Hope reappeared and thanked the men, giving them a pack of cigarettes each and apologising that they had missed the show. As I said, not sure if it true. Perhaps someone in the great beyond that is the internet knows.

    All the best,

    Dean.

    Blue prints

    Hi chaps,

Thanks for all your responses, my internet connection is currently down and I hope to get it fixed ASAP. In response to questions on the Gauntlet, yes, there is a large diagram dated 1935 on how to restress the wings in the field, plus a few others.

I hope to get back online asap (currently online at a chums).

Apologies for bringing back an ‘old’ thread.

    Best wishes,

    Dean

This isnt going well at all. When ever I click on the ‘manage attachments’ I get ‘ a pop up window was blocked’ , even with every setting concerning pop ups being set to off, this warning persists. Any ideas chaps?

Hi Papa Lima, many thanks for your response. The drawings were given to me by an elderly friend of mine. The Gladiator drawings are fascinating. Most have got pencil annotations on them, one even has a scale drawing in pencil of a Mercury engine. I shall try and figure out how to post photographs and get a few on here. There are about 20 or so individual pieces, the oldest of which is 1918 (the HP400).

    Best wishes,

    Dean
