An Apache came over the village at around 3pm. Nice and low, far more interesting than the usual helicopters that buzz around here. A Merlin, flying somewhat higher, followed later on.
Ken is far from leaving FlyPast, and in Nigel Price he has a very worthy successor. Fear not!
In short, yes. The memorials are to aircrew, not pilots. Air Gunners are certainly listed on the Battle Of Britain Monument on the Thames Embankment. The haven’t seemed to have had much of a mention in this years tv coverage.
Hope this helps,
Dean
I think that the doubters have missed a vital point. In this modern age, the public at large require a stamp of celebrity and Hollywood glamour before tuning in. Quite honestly, I’d stomach watching Wayne Rooney being flown in a Spitfire, if it meant that more of Joe Public tuned in and absorbed at least some of the story of the Battle of Britain. It is the only way it’s going to happen unfortunately. This evenings program was a damn fine piece of film. Well done to the BBC and all those that took part. Wonderful to see the veterans in the spotlight.
In order to fit in with our current fascination with ‘political correctness’, how about:
Vintage Airborne Violence Delivery Vehicle.
I’m happy with ‘vintage aeroplane’. Not ‘old plane’. Far too tabloid!
According to the poster I have seen, a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Mustang are due to display. The event is listed on the BBMF site.
Many thanks! Was beginning to think i’d gone off my rocker! Which at 24, is worrying!
Unless I have lost my mind, a high winged monplane, with what appeared to be floats, just flew over the outskirts of Derby.
I am a STEM Ambassador, in fact I did my first STEM event today! Rolls-Royce have included it in our apprenticeship framework. Unfortunately I am based in Derby so I doubt I will be able to help you directly, but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can be of any use.
Best regards,
Dean
Whilst the Tempest, with its black and yellow undersides did complement Black 6’s sand scheme, I fail to see how it was a significant point in human kinds achievements in aviation…top marks for interior design and display, the interactive screens are very good, but milestones?

I was actually very glad of the delay, the darkness really gave the run an edge. My photo’s were crap but i’ll post them later anyway just to give some idea to those who weren’t there.
Also took the chance to buy a Corgi XR728, which now sits on the bookshelf. Top event chaps, heart congratulations!

And here we are. For those unlucky enough to have X factor forced upon them, the second image reminds me of the “everybody is bright dancing” ad. I can see it now- “What do you bright dance with?”
“Glow sticks, you?”
“A pair of Avons”

Barry Sutton wrote a book, “The Way Of A Pilot”. A copy is currently sat on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. Picked my copy up for £8.00 on ebay a while back.
Hope this helps,

Siskin Blueprint
This was given to me some time ago, apologies for the poor photographs, i’m pushed for time. Hope this is of some interest.

Thanks for the help folks, I will keep you updated on the project as things happen. Apparently the rest of the engine is with the Heritage Trust.
Dean
No doubt the tooling could be made, but it has taken some persuasion, and will probably take more, to get this far, it is very much a matter of doing the project in our own time, something which a majority of apprentices will be / are unwilling to do- you should see the rush for the door at the end of the day. As an aviation ‘buff’ i’m trying to make it a personal mission to get this project at least started, and hopefully learn a few skills along the way. The main goal is as little expenditure as possible, i’m just going through the motions, trying to get the project started by giving our instructor as much help as possible.
As for the rest of the engine, it is not in our workshop, but may be with the Heritage Trust, we have been tasked with the prop alone. It is an interesting contrast to have part of a Jumo 211 next to a Trent 900. How technology changes.
Best wishes,
Dean
