Pete, i’m pretty sure that Derby Loco Works switched to overhaul of aircraft wings, particularly Hurricane, I recall that parts of Pete Vacher’s R4118 were ‘done’ there.
I stand to be corrected. Incidently, the wartime RR Merlin works on Nightingale Road, Derby, are closing on Monday.

Thanks for the kind comments chaps, much appreciated.
Here are a few more.

The 1935 Bluebird was powered by a Rolls Royce ‘R’ engine. This vehicle is in the USA as far as I am aware. On a similar theme, ‘Triplex’ was powered by 3 Liberty aero engines. Powerful, but a complete death trap! Golden Arrow was Lion powered, there are photo’s of it in the ‘Napier In The Sahara’ thread.

When I met Peter Twiss last summer, he told me that the aircraft he took the record in is now at Yeovilton. There is another FD.2 at Cosford, which I photographed last week.

Best wishes,

But surely, as part of the process of gaining funding from HLF, such research has to be done in order to clear all the hurdles, which TVOC did. So, these sums and figures must have been seen to be viable at the time by the accountants at HLF, what has changed? I use HLF as an example, surely other sources that have funded the project will have done individual research before going ahead and signing the cheques….
With tin hat firmly on, may I venture a point/question. Forgive me if this has already been made. The sum of £50,000 per month income must have been reached through research and doing the appropriate sums, surely these proposals and equations had some validity to hold any water with the HLF. If this is the case, have these proposals i.e how they arrive at this figure, been made public?

I’d love to see a Hurricane on that plinth, but as stated above, the public would probably think it was a Spitfire anyway. Any exposure for the history and actions of the RAF in such a place is great, wether it is a Spitfire or Hurricane shouldnt matter. I was under the impression that the plinth was to be filled by a statue of some sort, I saw a review of the candidates on the BBC news the other day.

But wouldnt deactivated mean that the explosive was still inside but safe? Where as inert would mean empty? Just thinking aloud.

Wild guess without looking at any photo’s, but could they be the cockpit access steps that fold into the airframe? Like I say, complete guess…
I would wager a healthy sum that your average ‘Gansta’ wouldn’t know the business end of a .303 machine gun from his backside, let alone reactivate and use one. You’d certainly struggle to fire one from the back seat of an XR3i! I sincerely hope that this ridiculous rule never comes into use.
I can imagine the conversation-
“Darling, i’ve bought something for the garden, all we’ve got to do is move the washing line and rearrange the gnomes”
“Ooh, that hanging basket we were looking at? Ahh, you’re so thoughtful”
“Err, not quite…”
12 Days In May gives reference to the fate of the Belgian Hurricanes, cant give detail as my copy is not to hand. Hope this helps.

Would appear you had a result Peter. Personally, I couldnt see any issues, but thats just my opinion.

Not die cast, but my favourite model has to be my resin 1/72 Fairey Delta 2, mounted on a plinth with the signature of Peter Twiss. One of only 50 made, it was this years birthday present from my boss.
Paying for staff and cleaners for the above…..
