Such a big missile, such an easy target for a SM 2 missile?
Hi Ja, I have not seen you since the World Cup, keep in touch my friend.
to use them in disater relief missions, humanitary aid in central and south America, the Caribbean, Indonesia, etc.
The Bofors 57 mm gun was placed in D 102 Nezahualcoyotl just for trial purpouses, it was in the mid 90´s when the mexican navy selected this naval gun for it´s new OPH, the gun was later removed. In fact it shoul be mention that today this ship is only used for training .
Her sister ARM Cuitlahuac was retired in 2002 , it is hoped that D-102 will be decomissiden soon.
Anyway it is still a beautiful ship.
Hello everybody I am Ja Worsley´s friend.!
Just the facts! After evaluations between the Saab Gripen and the Sukhoi 27, the Mexican Navy has selected the SU 27. The intention is to create a single interceptor squadron to protect the vital area of the oil platforms, refinaries and the nuclear power plant of Laguna Verde.
Acording to official news, the Navy has get in contact with the russian state arms company Rosoboronexport, but still the purchase of these aircraft is unclear as the Navy has to convince the mexican congress to get the money for these aircraft.
Since 2004 the Navy manifested it´s desire to get an squadron of jet fighters, and sended a comission of high rank officers to visit Sweden and Russia to evaluate the Gripen and the Sukhoi.
How possible coluld it be for Mexico to buy these Flankers? In my opinion it has a good chance, the economy of the country is in a very good position in wich for the first time in history, Mexico has more money in reserves than it´s external debidt. With the high prices of the oil in the international market, Mexico has fresh money to financiate many important projects in security and defence.
So, let´s wait and see what hapends ….
See you again guys in a a few days!
D.
Does anybody still remember that Cuba still flyes 4 to 6 Mig 29?
And one can say, why the hell does Cuba need their Migs? So let me answer those who said , why the devil does the Mexican Navy want to buy SU-27´s? Just for protection of the strategic oil platforms zone. When a country is a big supplier of oil for the north american market and when the 40 – 50 % of the wellfare comes from the oil, you need to protect these zone with modern equipment, patrol boats, corvettes, AEW aircraft, helicopters and jet fighters to intercept any kind of air intruder.
8 or 10 Sukhoi 27 are not as expensive as some suggest. If the country invest 200 or 250 US million in these aircraft to enhance the security of a vital area of the economy, this just make sense.
Why did the Mexican Navy choose the SU 27 in place of the Gripen? In the first place because they are cheaper -and we can assume they colud be used aircraft but in good conditions-
Second, the Navy is quite happy with the experience of using russian helicopters -Mi 17-. Actually the Navy has been using some 20 to 25 Mi 17 for more than 12 years and has not lost in accidents even a single chooper.Russian aircrafl in mexican naval service -like the Antonov 32 too- has proved to be though, reliable, efficient and cheap to buy and to operate.
And in the third place, the Sukhoi more than duobles the tactical radious of the Gripen, and this important when the budget is thight and you have to cover a big area with few planes.
Wich one is more silent and efficient? The Akula 2, Sea Wolf or Los Angeles?
For the moment the only SAM´s in inventory with the mexican navy is the short range-low altitude Igla. More missiles will be adquired soon, but , of what kind? it is still uncertain.
Interesting note. Mexico is one of the biggest user of the Stridsbat 90H with 40 in inventory for drug interception and coastal patrol duties, plus some other of the improved IC 16M design being build in mexican shipyards. hope to see the 2010 NY in mexican service too!!
This news is good for Rusia and it´s submarine force, nobody want´s another tragedy like the Kursk.
Denmark has had a long tradition in submarine operations, I am not sure but I think the danes were among the first in Europe in operating submarines. During the cold war a strong submarine force was necesary to protect the baltic pass from soviet amphibious forces that could strike in the event of war, the north of Germany. But now the baltic republics are part of Nato too, so these is no longer a need for a submarine force. Although to keep one or two small subs for training is not so bad idea, just to keep the tradition.
Once I had the oportunity to talk with an US Navy official and he told me that now the concern of the US is the Kilo because it is difficult to detect, It seem`s to be paradogic that despite expending billions in nuclear propulsion submarines, and in resources to destroy soviet SSGN a simple and rugged submarine like the Kilo can penetrate a carrier`s defences and sink it.
I don`t know if there is still a Foxtrot submarine in service, for some years Cuba operated two but now they ere scrapped. (And unofficiali these two boats worried a little our almirals for some time).
Here you have my top ten list.
SSK´s :
1. Russia.Kilo and new Amur classes.
2. Germany: 209, Tupi (Brazil), TR 1700 (Argentina), 212. The subs from Brazil and Argentina are among the longer and more capable SSK´s of the world, but they can not fire missiles. In this field the new french-spanish Scorpeone of Chile has a tactical advantage as they will be fitted with SM 39 Exocets.
3. Sweden. Vastergotland and the australian version the Collin class.
4. Netherlands. Zvaardis class.
Well perhaps there could be others points of view as I am not an expert, I made this list in accordance with I had read in books and magazines.
I think that a modern submarine has to be very quiet to avoid detection, armament and missile fit is important but it could be secundary, with aid from the US even an old submarine as the Romeo could be fitted with sub Harpoon´s, but in practice for avoiding detection and destruction, to be quiet under the water is the key for sinking a destroyer or even a nuclear carrier. That is why the US Navy is showing so much concern about the Kilo .
Well it seems to me that german submarines such as the 205, 209 are very reliable and efficient boats but I think that the new 212 is a step beyond specially in the field of air independent propulsion systems.
I think that in discussing about the russian success in submarine development we should not only mention the Kilo class, but the Akula too, according to some books I had read, the Akula is as silent or even more than the best submarine from the west.
