RE: Heathrow should close!
I’ve visited LHR a few times and the impression I’ve got is of a busy, congested and severly out-dated operation. Not only were there planes queing but the landside traffic is incredibly difficult to work around.
It seems also that they are trying to cram an awful lot into a very limited area with the new terminal possibly making it even more cramped and congested. Its funny I mention this because the LHR ATIS message actual states “Pilots are advised to exercise caution when manouvering in the holding ares as wing tip allowance is not assured”.
Like I say…this is my impression and I don’t know the full layout….surroundings etc…
I think its about time a new airport was at least looked into and considored. Then we have to ask ourselves…what would happen to LHR if it was closed…a mass derelict area? Maybe not the buildings but, the airfield and hangers… would flying be totally stopped there and the operation split in two or would it be fully changed to a new sight…. what about the environment… all these questions and… I’ll shut-up now!

RE: low cost long haul?
I think Virgin prices are generally as ‘low-cost’ as long Haul Flights will get.

RE: QANTAS 747
I’ve only ever seen Wunala Dreaming and that was at a remote stand (possibly BA engineering) at LHR back in 2000 I think it was. I also have a limited edition hand painted model of B747-438 VH-OJB ‘Wunala Dreaming’ adorning my shelf!

RE: A Career in Aviation?
I had my flying career all mapped out ahead of me until a year ago I went for my CAA class 1 medical at CAA HQ, Gatwick. Due to SLIGHT shortsightedness and a glide in my right eye I was told I would never fly commercially.
As you can imagine I was gutted and lost a lot of the passion for aviation that I’d had since I can’t remember. I was and still am in limbo as to where to go from here but, Aeronautical engineering looks obvious.
I’m completing my Maths/Physic A-levels and will possibly go on to University to study an aeronautical subject after a proposed years travel and work.
My advice to all you guys n girls who want to go into this field…get a medical ASAP before you start pumping any cash into flying lessons, equipment, fees etc… I was lucky I hadnt put too much in, I have heard of others not so lucky. If you think you may have a problem, no matter how small, get it sorted.
AndrewM…If you don’t mind me asking…what exactly is your disability?

RE: low cost long haul?
Low cost-Long Haul. I have got to agree with Preston….BRING IT ON! I’d go for it, thats if i needed/wanted to travel to a far away destination. I do believe though that there would only be a certain minority interested (as the replies to this thread have shown) so I have honestly got to say I dont think it would work.

RE: QANTAS 747
Its Nalanji Dreaming (VH-EBU- Boeing 747-338). Both fantastic though I prefer Wunala Dreaming (B747-438 VH-0JB).
Enjoy…

RE: Designing your own aircraft/airline.
TEMPLATE!!! OUT RAGE…I don’t use templates!!!
well….actually for this one I did…but don’t shout about it..ok? good.
I have attempted several B747 airframes on paint b4 and its the only a/c type that just doesn’t seem to come out quite right.
I used Luke’s link for the 747 template.
There’s loads of templates (not blank though)at:
http://www.aerosite.net/artistic.htm
This is the bit I’m really chuffed about…The airframe started life as a Virgin a/c in the new silver livery. It took ages to remove the old c/s and 1/8 that time to place my ‘off the top of my head’ design onto the template. I basically re-drew the whole thing! wot a pain…I’d try and find an all white one next time.

RE: Models
Yep…the airlines’ personal ID numbers. Its the same for all aircraft types. The varients will have the airline number after the initial varient specification.
Qantas = X 38
BA (as u said) = X 36
