Does the Swedish AF have plans to fit air-refuelling probes to their Gripens for expeditionary deployments? The routing this group of aircraft took to deploy to Alaska is probably the best advertsement for getting some probes on their birds.

I believe the C/D models are IFR capable, i know the SAF ones are….

BTW what wing are these from? Anyone know? I saw two Gripens today taking off from Uppsala…

Just found an interesting page about the Mustang in Swedish service that included this excerpt
“43 were delivered by US ferry pilots to Sweden on Apr 23:rd, flying from Liverpool to Bromma airfield in Stockholm. On this occasion they met German fighters over the North Sea, whereupon one Messerschmitt 109 was shot down. Three more arrived on Apr 30:th. These were all accepted by the Swedish air force immedeately upon delivery. “

    “USN” C-130

Thats a USMC Herc doing trials to use the C-130 as a COD aircraft. Also, the USN does operate the C-130 in such squardons as VR-53 -54 and -55. USN Herc were also responsible for air transport to and from McMurdo base in Antartica.

    Jan-
Thanks for the info, I am going to look into that book, sounds very interesting. Did the Flygvapnet not buy some Italian and German aircraft prior to the outbreak of the war? Not sure which though…
Do you have any further info on the B-17 “test flights” with US crews? Sounds very interesting… What became of the aircraft?

I remeber seeing a few aircraft that the Swedes did paint with thier own marking, much like the Swiss did with some German aircraft. Just wondering if there were any pics floating around. I do remmeber a B-17 but maybe it was civil registered. Any pics of the German aircraft in 1940? I misspoke about about landing in Sweden with the Tre Kronor, obviulsy this came after!
BTW might be down in Gotebrorg next month at a friends summer house, maybe we can do fika?

When it comes to best TRAINED pilots, I’ll have to say Israeli. And not because I’m biased 😀
I think it’s Israeli pilot because they have a lot of flight hours (more than the USAF AFAIK) as well as combat experience.

Comabt experince??? what are talking about besides mostly unopposed bombing? 1982 in Lebanon? think most of those pilots are a bit old now!

Can they do that? I mean the shell is so small and very fast.

Btw, any idea why the JAS is not using the Oerlikon? Instead, it use the Mauser of non-swedish origin.

Last i checked Oerlikon isnt Swedish either, rather Swiss….

Why, was he the only B-52 pilot in the USAF capable of flying at low altitude?

Just the only only one infamous for it….

I spent my Midsommar hungover in a field as I had overdone a bit the night before, but did the duck dance around the pole and ate sill (or rather choked it down). I must admit I am having a little bit of a hard time sleeping around here, the “offical” sunrise was 0300 the other day, I was trying to get to sleep and the birds were chirping!!!! AHHHHH

Are you still down south Papa Lima? I am in Uppsala for the summer…
