The US Navy had been having a naval exercise in the northern Norwegian Sea. Su-27 started harrassing the P-3 Orions which normally patrolled that area. On the final day of the exercise the carrier sent two F-14D’s to escort the P-3. The F-14’s flew in very tight formation with the P-3, until Norwegian GCI warn them of approaching aircraft. When the Su-27’s got close, the F-14D’s broke formation and rode the tails of the Su-27’s. There was a big party aboard the carrier that night with gun camera footage being shown.

Can you provide a source for this information, always eager to learn about Cold War encounters such as this…thanks
Ethan
That name sends chills down my spine…I’m sorry to hear he is dead, contributed much, though i think he was somewhat of an “intellectual terrorist”. Despite my best efforts, i never understood him!
Why dont you send the car to Australia? I am moving to Europe shortly and have looked into shipping my baby…it only costs around $500, maybe doublt that to Oz??? Would be worth it i bet! Only sticky issue would be for me is emmisions and a few cosmetic things, might not apply to you…
Wow, if this is about historical importance I cannot belive no one has mentioned the MiG-21 and its variants…perhaps the most influential aircraft of the post war era….F-4 is up there too afte that I’m not sure.
Here is a few more…the Seafire, an 8/10th’s scale Mustang parked right in front of the orginal (not from kit, fabricated by the guys at Crystal Lake and powered by two Ford V-6’s, Mike said it will cruise comfortably on just one!) ,the P-40 Warhawk, the cockpit of the A-37 and the F-5 sans wings (Mike told me this probably wouldnt fly again…too expensive, but rather would be a static display)
Steve Bakke’s -5, which was also at the Corsair gathering…bet that was a fun ride.
Yea, it was an incredible ride…that radial shaking what seems like the entire earth… I have a neat pic of us making a turn full bore down the runway, but was taken with my crappy digital camera and isnt zoomed in much, maybe i will post it.
Apparently Steve Bakke is no longer flying for Semitool, not sure who is flying the Corsair. I havent seen it in the air since spring. However this is not verified, just heard it through the rumor mill.
I bet that first photo is taken somewhere in Nevada/Arizona during Red Flag or a similar excerise.
Here some pics of a Corsair based here in Kalispell, MT. (I’m in the backseat 😉 )
Me in the Seafire….
I recently had the wonderful time visting the hangars in Crystal Lake. Simply amazing! I’m not sure I have any photos that differ from Mark12’s, so this and one of the Seafire cockpit will be it. The place is incredible and the caretaker who showed me around was more then gracious, extremely knowledgable and great to talk with…
This place is a candy store (albeit an expensive one!)
Wasnt he the head of MIG (Moscow Industrial Group) the group that runs MiG, rather then MiG itself?
That looks like a turbo from of my car! Ive been looking for it! http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=70811 would explain why the Talon hasnt been performing up to par.
Honestly, though i have zero experince with a Merlin engine, it looks like something having to with the induction system. As for it being a turbo, with little imagaintation i can see the compressor housing, and intake and exhaust housings. though Merlins had superchargers, negating the exhuast part, couldnt be that then.
I wrote a paper about the Winter War, I’ll dig it out and look at my references, I know i came across some info on both the I=16 and the Polikarpov design bureau.
The Soviets tried to intercept SR-71’s with MiG-25 in the late 70’s early 80’s, but to no avail. I wasnt aware they had suceeded with -31’s.
ATC Pal- Yes, i did mean the Voodoos, Not sure why i wrote down the delta dagger! whoops…nonetheless still armed with a nuclear Genie. Also great story about the Viggen and Blackbird, i did not realize that there was international airspace between Gotland and the mainland. Think they would have better sucess then the Soviets interecpting Blackbirds over Siberia with Foxbats?
Jan- I also doubt Sweden has possesed nukes, but this prof (his name is Kenneth Lockridge, was there in the early and mid-eighties) has made some interesting points. One is that the Swedes gave into the pressures of the womens anti-nuclear movement with hardly a fight, perhaps just moving the program beyond public view. interesting arguement, but i still agree that Sweden doesnt have them. However, I am sure they possess the ablity to do so very quickly.
I’ve also been reading abit about Soviet intrusions in both the air and sea of Swedish airspace and sea. Very interesting, as the Soveits downed a Swedish ELINT aircraft and a Viggen crashed overflying a new Soviet cruiser…
Swedish nuclear weapons-I have a professor here, though i havent taken a class from, only talked with, who was a cultural history professor at Umea. He is convinced that Sweden HAS nuclear weapons and is just keeping it secret. I think he might be a bit crazy and i seriusly doubt Sweden is hiding nukes, but has always made me wonder a bit…
Canada also has denied ever having nuclear weapons but fielded the F-106 Delta Dart with a nuclear tipped Genie missile!!! The Genie would be terribly ineffective without a nuclear weapon as it is basiclly an unguided rocket, makes you wonder a bit.
ATC PAL- wasnt there a crash of a Swedish Viggen in the straits between Denmark and Sweden. As i remeber two Viggens were performing ACM, one had engine problems, the pilot ejected and landed right next to a Danish ferry? Can’t remember where i read this, i’ll try to find it.
