The USAF Museum MiG-23 is not an East German example (it’s an MLD anyway), I forget where it came from but it was not purchased by AFMC or sourced by the USAF. It was actually impounded because some genius was trying to import it into the US!
Read about that. Impounded by BATF as it still had a functional 23mm cannon!
Thats not glue, its spray paint… Geez get your substance abuse up to par.
The americans created the Sheridan tank… how much did they actually care for their personel? The Americans also released diseases into the general public of their own country and monitored their hospitals to determine the scope and spread of the resulting epidemics. Patients in US hospitals were injected with plutonium to determine the effects… surprisingly they all died. These things happened in the 50s and 60s. It was certainly a different time.
Where did I say anything about America/Americans?? Could you please quote it for me?
Oh wait, that right.
I did say anything about America/Americans/American actions…
Quick to play the East V West game eh?
By the way, what was wrong with the Sheridan? By most accounts, aside from some issues with the 152mm “gun” it was a decent animal.
I think your referring to the Sherman, or Zippo tank of WWII fame.
SOSUS can hear it, might be a little on the noisy side ya think?
Why would very low frequency noise make you deaf? Different frequencies are not the problem… very very high freqency noise doesn’t make you deaf either. It is the loudness of noise that makes you deaf, not frequency. Sonic frequency is a band of wave energy… if high or low frequency waves made you deaf than light or gamma ray bursts would make you deaf. (gamma ray bursts would make you deaf but only because they would make you dead).
.
You sir, are amazing, I shall default to you on all future opinions.
Everyone on this board has agreed that the Bear is indeed a loud aircraft.
Hence your argument about loudness is rather moot, or need I re-state all the facts in every post to make comprehension a bit easier for you?
I was simply making an observation. Knowing the Soviets disregard for personal safety in other areas during the Cold War, I do not find it a stretch to imagine that there is indeed a shred of truth behind these rumors.
Oh wait, now we are going to have a diatribe concerning the statement “Knowing the Soviets disregard for personal safety in other areas during the Cold War”.
Strategy page is indeed a very very unreliable and very biased “source”, if one can call it a source at all.
Yes, I know. I took 45 seconds to Google and came up with that.
Just saying that with all the rumors about it I am sure there is a small shred of truth in there somewhere. Do all crews go deaf? Doubt it. Can the design and the low throbbing noise have an adverse effect on crews hearing. Wouldn’t rule it out.
Here are some links saying the indeed the tips of the props can and do reach at least transonic speeds.
Ok, quick 45 secs search came up with this
http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htnavai/articles/20050215.aspx
Certainly not the most reliable source… but I’msure there is probably a shred of truth in that the aircraft made at least some crewmembers losing hearing at an accelerated rate.
But I am sure GarryB will have a 3 paragraph tirade about my sources, believeing anything Soviet could do such a thing, etc, waiting for me in the morning.
Where did you read that? I never heard of that, and neither did former Bear crews tell me about it when i spoke to them.
Ever heard one? Like Ken said, it is not ‘insanely loud’. It’s definately noisy, but not ‘insanely loud’. Besides, those submariners can easily be scared off by sending An-22s their way. They won’t know the difference.
I’ve run across this statement as well, that old Bear crews become deaf prematurely. I’ll see if I can find the source this week.
Simply obeying instructions once you find yourself in the wrong place would have saved them. The fact that they paniced and ran resulted in the same thing that happens in Hollywood movies when a criminal attempts to run away from a crime scene after a cop tells them to freeze… they get shot.
Nice Garry, love your justification for killing civilians. They were running, certainly they must have been guilty. Sickening.
Never cease to amaze….
Saab has a stealthy UAV if I am not mistaken.
I wonder what has more commonality with the F404, the RM12 or the F414.
I was under the impression that the RM12 is a F404. Has Volvo changed it significantly?
tanker capability (again, not a huge advantage for Switzerland).
Arent C/D Gripens IFR capable?

In that case you’d need to add a booster on all ordnance launched, plus initial guidance so that it doesn’t hit the plane – remember D-21 and Blackbird?
That brings weight and complexity, and above all useless risk; all of which is unwanted in any plane.
As they say “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!”. Gravity never fails, that’s why they use it to drop stuff from planes. :diablo:
While I agree that gravity is never broken, I beg to differ about it never failing! There are tons of vids of bad separations of underwing stores. Just because it supposed to fall, doesn’t mean it will, even if everything mechanically is functioning.
I think Italian Harriers have them as well, maybe Spanish Hornets?
Well, at least one nation in NATO has S-300’s.:diablo:
Will be interesting to see where they end up. They are in Crete now.
So what about the infamous snooker game that opened the door for the sale?
