    RE: NATO members

    >Is Russia a member of NATO? I could have sworn they weren’t,
    >but I got this individual on another board that swears they
    >are. Can someone please clarify?

Russia is not a full fledged member of NATO, but rather a honourary member of the alliance. Russia was given a seat at the NATO table in late May and will have equal status with the other 19 nations.

Air India to acquire eight more aircraft

NEW DELHI, June 26 (AFP) – India’s state carrier Air India is to acquire eight more aircraft to connect with cities in the United States by December this year, a reports said Wednesday.

The eight aircraft include two Boeing 747-400s and six Airbus-310s, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain told the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.

The process of leasing the aircraft, without crews, had already begun, the minister said without mentioning the cost of the acquisition.

The new aircraft will help Air India connect the southern Indian cities of Cochin, Madras and Bangalore with New York and Chicago besides Paris, via London, PTI reported.

Air India was leasing the aircraft with the hope of getting day or evening landing slots at London’s Heathrow airport, Hussain said.

Air India at present has a fleet of 23 aircraft.

The airline also planned to come up with a “new image” in December when the new routes were scheduled for launch, Hussain said.

SriLankan is not the “sister” company of Emirates. 51% of SriLankan Airlines is owned by the government of Sri Lanka and Emirates has equity in 49% of the airline.

Here is a news report on the intended Emirates service to North America in 2003.

    http://www.dqg.org/qquill/oct01/stme.htm

    About Emirates
Emirates is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. Established in 1985, it now serves 56 cities in 39 countries in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, West Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Pacific Rim and Australia, and is the winner of more than 200 awards

Its modern fleet boasts an average age of just 2.7 years and includes Boeing 777-200s and 777-300s, and Airbus A330-200s, A310-300s, and A300-600Rs. It plans to start services to North America in 2003, using Airbus A340-500s able to fly non-stop between Dubai and the US West Coast. Emirates is also the launch customer for the Airbus A380 super-jumbo, and has placed seven firm orders with options on five more.

I read somewhere that Emirates will be flying to North America from next year. I have been on Emirates several times and it is by far the best airline in the world.

    Mr. Lott’s article

    Rabie,
Mr. John R. Lott’s research on gun control is widely respected. His article is definitely not biased at all. His research involves facts and figures without any fictitious claims whatsoever.

RE: Pic Of The Day-High Above!!

Not a -400, notice the lack of winglets. Also, the engines are more common to the -200. So, my final answer is Air India 747-200.
