RE: Pic of the evening — Pilot’s nightmare
btw, what is that plane?
Sam.
RE: Short-haul turboprops
I think customer service has a lot to do with ATR’s success. From what I have heard ATR sales directors are very agressive and very customer oriented, much more than Bombardier.

Tatu’s lesb*an Kiss Too Controversial
Tue February 4, 2003 09:03 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) – The BBC said Tuesday it wouldn’t be showing Russian teenage duo Tatu’s pop video which features a controversial lesb*an kiss.
Tatu, who shot to the top of the UK charts Sunday with their debut British single “All the Things She Said,” have sparked fury in the British media over accusations they promote “pedo-pop” and target the “dirty old man market.”
Their video features Julia Volkova, 18, and Lena Katina, 17, wearing school uniforms, kissing and cuddling.
The BBC said it would be inappropriate to show the video on “Top of the Pops” Friday because it attracts a young audience.
New footage of the band, whose name translates as “This Girl Loves That Girl,” will be shown instead.
“It would be more sensible for us to show something that’s exclusive and not controversial,” a BBC spokeswoman said.
The BBC move follows a decision by rival ITV1 not to show the video on its Saturday morning music show “CD:UK.”
British daytime television hosts, husband and wife team Richard and Judy, have tried to get Tatu’s single banned, describing their antics as “pedophile porn.”
Ivan Shapovalov, the man behind Tatu, has admitted to various media that he came up with the idea after visiting pornographic Web Sites.

RE: CSA
No. Its CSA. I thought you were asking me about Aeroflot.
CSA operates to CMB twice a week. On Tuesdays it is a non-stop flight and on Thursdays there is a short-stop in Dubai.
Sam.
RE: CSA
The Aerflot flight from SVO to CMB makes one short-stop either in Dubai or Karachi depending on the day. They operate the A310 and the IL-86.
Sam.
RE: CSA
>It would seem then that now would be the perfect time to
>experience Aeroflot’s ‘Soviet Charm’ before their new brand
>comes fully into place!
Actually, I have experienced the “Aeroflot charm” non-stop since 1986. Aeroflot has been my airline of choice up untill they stopped flying to Colombo about 2 years ago. Hence my trying to experience the “Soviet charm” with CSA.
I can’t stand all these modern airlines where the customer comes first and the cabin crew comes second 😀
Sam.
RE: CSA
>I’m afraid you might be disappointed by the lack of ‘Soviet
>Charm’ CSA have become very westernised with a modern
>western fleet, also there is a distinct lack of Soviet style
>service, the staff onboard the aircraft always seem happy!
>:D
>
>I hope you enjoy your flight!
That’s too bad. I mean good for them, but what good is an airline if they serve you proper food and listen to your concerns? 😀
I say bring back the Soviet “charm”!!!
Sam.
RE: Airport codes
The site where Chicago O’ Hare stands today was an Orchard in the good old days. Hence the code ‘ORD’ for Orchard.
My favourite code is ‘SUX’ for Sioux City, Iowa, USA. Sioux City has been trying for years to get the code changed, but they have been refused. Their excuse is that “SUX” gives a bad connotation and the city does not ‘suck’ at all.
On a lighter note, Sioux City girls do “Suck” even if the city does not. 😀 😀

RE: Short-haul turboprops
wysiwyg,
ATR seem to have a monopoly, regardless of the Dash-8 comparisons you pointed out. Bombardier has sold only 6 new aircraft in 2002 while ATR has sold 16 new and 53 pre-owned aircraft.
I am not sure if its because of agressive marketing or due to ATR’s being in this business for a longer time.
In Asia, ATR has a firm grip on the market and most regional airlines fly ATRs including India’s Jet Airways and Thailand’s Bangkok Airways.
Sam.
RE: CSA
In Asia, Colombo is the only destination CSA flies to. I am planning to fly on the nostalgic airline from Prague to Colombo(its non-stop as well) very soon. I hope they still have some lingering Soviet-era “charm” that is so reminiscent of Aeroflot.
Sam.
RE: Short-haul turboprops
>Anyway, does anyone know why the Saab 2000 was so much of a flop? >One minute they introduce the thing, Crossair buys a few, then Saab >pull out of commercial aviation ?
mongu,
Excuse me for my ignorance. I know so little about commercial aircraft, hence my questions. According to http://www.saabaircraft.com they are still the selling Saab 340 and 2000 aircraft. What do you mean they pulled out of commercial aviation?
Sam.
RE: Short-haul turboprops
This is what ATR http://www.ataaircraft.com has to say about the lack of a APU.
Why ATR has not developed an APU for its aircraft?
“ATR offered an innovative alternative to the APU known as the “Hotel Mode”. The Hotel Mode concept (i.e. offering air conditioning and electrical power on the ground) was made possible through the application of a propeller brake on the right hand side engine turbine. Thus the weight and added maintenance cost of an APU is spared.
A survey of 20 customers (214 a/c) has been made to gather information about the rate of utilization and the effectiveness of Hotel Mode. The data gathered from ATR Customers have confirmed that Propeller Brake installation is a smart and effective solution welcomed by Airlines due to tangible advantages over APU. In fact the ATR Operators’ Survey results are:
90% of ATR operators use the propeller brake routinely
70% of the airlines consulted utilize the Hotel Mode at every stop-over
Hotel Mode completely fulfills airlines’ requirements in terms of air conditioning,
hydraulic and electrical generation.
Sam.
RE: Short-haul turboprops
Many thanks again wysiwyg. Can you expand a bit more on why you prefer the cockpit layout of the Dash-8? Also, what is your basis on placing on the Saab 2000 in the top position?
Sam.
RE: What is the most risque food you have ever eaten?
Arthur, that can be arranged. Let me tell you a funny story. In a suburb in Colombo people were complaining that their doggies are being stolen and were disappearing. After some thought allegations were levelled against a Korean restaurant that had opened up in the recent past that had doggie on their menu. Suffice to say that most people in that area have their dogs in their houses nowadays 😀
How about Escargo? I thought most europeans have had these buggers one time or another.
