Perhaps the concept of “volunteers” needs to be revised to include finance and management not just the engineering sector…..

I recently participated in a MLA funded programme on volunteering, which was available to ‘Registered’ museums in the East Midlands. These two sectors (finance & management) were acknowledged to be relatively easy to recruit for; and things like the ‘Volunteer Charter’ here in the UK are helping to formalise volunteering opportunities.

I believe that IWM Duxford has embraced their own volunteering programme.

Indeed! Who suggested that education ever had anything to do with it, other than the provision of information to those who might ask…..

IIRC the education aspect to the project was a condition of the HLF grant.

At Waddington I believe an ‘official directive’ tightened up on the issue of ‘un-approved’ collections on the base during airshows and even stopped ATC hassling visitors; don’t forget the airshow raises its own money for service and local charities.

Having recently been privileged to receive a host of personal papers and effects into the Newark Air Museum Archive from a 619 Squadron Wireless Operator who was shot down on 22 June 1944 over northern Belgium; I can assure John Green that ‘other generations’ do feel exceptionally close to this and are moved by the stories relating to Bomber Command.

I wept whilst reading his POW correspondence, which was sent to his family in Dagenham, urging them to ensure that his girlfriend in Lincoln knew that he was safe and that he still loved her.

This was made even more poignant knowing that after he returned to England they were married, yet his life was tragically cut-short by illness in 1950!

Addendum: the POW items mentioned above still have to be incorporated into this family website that also illustrates what ‘other generations’ feel. The nephew of the Wireless Operator was also in tears during my telephone call to him when he realised that people were still interested in his uncle.

Yesterday I was fortunate to be able to use the Helicopter shuttle from Newark, we landed at Waddington at 9.30am and all of the roads seemed to have a lot of traffic on them but it was moving steadily.

This was unlike the situation 2 years ago when at a similar time of day all of the same roads were at a complete standstill and gridlocked!

Hats off to around 1800 service personnel who this weekend are making the Airshow happen; despite the base personnel being operational in two different theatres – well done everyone at RAF Waddington! 🙂

Don’t forget that Gatwick needs our support!
