At the moment there’s a small album of Valiant photographs at Farnborough in this Gallery on the Newark Air Museum website!
…Tell you what, next year drop the prizes and get Bill to put his best Sunday dress on, and I will follow him around with a bucket collecting donations for the owl’s, what do you all think, and then he can be all yours Tony!! And Howard, you can tell Bill it was my idea, I am feeling brave!!
I even bottled telling him about this year’s request .. so I’ll need to pick the right time!! 😀
….I would happily go over to Newark as I’m well known there with my measuring rig but sadly I just don’t have the time at present….
Hello John, no problem with you visiting to survey any of the museum aircraft you’re always most welcome. 🙂
The ‘tame surveyor’ was proposing to undertake a similar exercise to what you described; he’s currently heavily engaged in ‘plumbing’ the Monospar to ensure that everything is realigned correctly before the frame is completed and re-covered – the lack of plans for this airframe has complicated the process, but he and his colleague are making a superb effort on that particular ‘time consuming’ project!
I have spoken to the ‘tame surveyor’ and he asked the following question:
“Is it likely that the information would be in the relevant Hastings AP?” 😉
Certainly no rush from me, like to do things Cornish style – dreckly!:)
I had a quick look this afternoon and whilst I could see the outer wing joint the one between the engines was not apparent (to my non-engineering eyes)!
I will ask my ‘tame surveyor’ to have a look next week! 🙂
Has anyone checked in Tim Senior’s excellent publication on the Hastings (D & V Publishing) – Appendix 1 contains a lot of technical data?
Personally speaking I would love to know the distances of wing tip to the first wing join (just outboard of outer engine), the intermediate section span (ie from that join to the one just outboard of the inner engine), and confirmation of the centre section span – however I entirely undertstand that this isn’t the easiest of tasks!
I may struggle with that myself this afternoon, however I do have a ‘tame surveyor’ who may rise to the challenge – unfortunately he’s not due to be at NAM today!
:diablo: We could organise a ‘Tape-Fest’ on TG517!
I’m over at Newark this afternoon to do my ‘Scuttle Tours’ bit but I think I’ll struggle to get time to take any measurements – I’ll see if anyone else has time to do something!
What exactly are people looking for re the Hasting wing?
I believe that is a reference to Hangar 15 at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. 🙂
More Valiant knowledge than me – but even more over here http://www.vforcereunion.co.uk/ – I understand that there’re some great new contacts being unearthed this time round! 😉
Now there’s a thought – Newark had a film crew in last Friday filming on the Hastings, if they have to return I may ask a few questions! 🙂
I did spend 15 minutes trying to explain the ‘hobby’ to a BBC radio presenter last Tuesday and he seemed impressed with the dedication that is shown to the subject!! 😀
Might it have been a Jetstream rather than a Dominie?
Never tried to move something out of the UK, always ‘in-bound’ and I suspect it might depend on it’s source of original manufacture i.e. inside the UK, EU or outside of those areas! 🙂
It is the Valiant cockpit that was at Bruntingthorpe and Newark paid for it to be moved to Winthorpe and then ……..
… that’s as far as I go with that episode!! 🙁
I’ll catch up with you on June 16th & 17th June 2012, Scott and I’ll fill in the rest!
Some old Valiants pictured in here! 😀
I believe the Valiant’s in Scotland in a good home 🙂
– but how it came to Newark is another story, but not for a public forum!!
Thanks to ‘our’ Bruce and the site manager(s?) more details can be found here http://www.cockpitfest.co.uk/
