Not sure how many Shackletons saw service in the “Cod Wars” – indeed which one, as I believe that the dispute lasted several years?

Up until early 1970s some Squadrons were still using Mk.3s, before transferring onto Nimrods – a couple of books here http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/shop.htm feature many stories from WR977 that is displayed at Newark.

I remember the local MP for Newark Ted Bishop advising my school’s aviation society in 1976/77 that he had just retuned from a Nimrod sortie over Iceland.

The AEW.2s obviously also continued until the early 1990s, until replaced with the Sentry, but not sure whether they were involved.

As an aside Newark’s Hastings TG517 flew 4 Icelandic “Cod War” patrols – Operation Heliotrope; and it still carries the 4 fish on its nose to denote those sorties.

You should be on the right lines then, I was part of a group that was allowed to recover part of a Hunter wing pylon from there back in the 1970s.

Having a good look through my references the diagram is not 100% clear so I have cropped a picture of the panel in XM594 at NAM, the switches are clearly labeled axactly as you described.

The notes I have for some reason have these switchs labeled as FUEL FLOW indicator switch!!.

Just goes to show not all publications are correct!!!!.

It might be worthwhile noting that many of the Vulcans that were delivered to museum’s in 1982 / 83 had a lot of avionics kit removed as part of the disposal process.

XM594 was no different – from what I can recall the RAF worked on her for 4 days post-delivery before formally handing over the aircraft.

One can only assume that the replacement items were re-positioned correctly – just a thought! 😮 :confused:

Due to the distance involved in getting a team down to Culdrose, Newark opted to pay for a RAF team from St Athan to do the move – on a fixed price deal.

Good decision!

The dismantling over ran, due to the challenging access to the large number of bolts needed to effect the wing removal; I seem to recollect an approximate delay of more than 24 hours.

The museum’s restoration co-ordinator who oversaw the move and helped make the decision to seek “professional” assistance has since retired; so I couldn’t check with him.

Hasn’t a Jetstream just been taken to Brooklands – they might have a more up to date experience?
