I’m told they still have a lot of work to do before it’s complete.

I’ve also spotted more advanced pictures..

Does anyone have any idea why the spitfire has radiation warning signs all over its cockpit?MH

Radioactive instrument dials – therefore a Health & Safety warning to limit access?

    Agent K

I have spoken with the Curator and he told me that sadly most of the cockpit on WX905 was already gutted before it was purchased by Newark from RAF Henlow via the M.O.D.

It is only slowly being replaced as and when items become available for re-fitting, although they may have some appropriate scopes etc in their exhibition building.

I did my end of course radar exam on that very Venom at Yatesbury in 1960.

Interesting, I don’t know how complete the radar and avionics fit is on the aircraft, next time I’m over at the museum I’ll try and check with the Curator.

Newark Air Museum have a series of Vulcan related lectures planned for later this year, which follows on from the brilliant night last May that covered Vulcan Operations and the Black Buck Raids. You get the chance to ask those involved about the Raids etc. Details are on their website at

    http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/specialevents.htm

    But here’s what it says:

“A series of talks based on the Avro Vulcan during five decades of service with the RAF has been arranged at the Holy Trinity Community Centre, Boundary Road, Newark, NG24 4AU.

22 May 2008 @ 2000 hours – Flying the Vulcan – by Group Captain John Laycock.

21 August 2008 @ 2000 hours – Fighting the Vulcan – by Squadron Leader High Prior.

20 November 2008 @ 2000 hours – Showing the Vulcan – by Squadron Leader David Thomas.

There will be just 200 places available for each talk and tickets will cost just £5.00 per person. Details of ticket availability will be announced shortly on the News Page of the website”.

Not sure about the cause but one exhibit that certainly survived and came out of the RAFM Reserve Store at RAF Henlow was de Havilland Venom NF3 WX905 [7458M], which went to Newark Air Museum.

According to my Virtual Museum CD ROM the airframe moved up to Winthorpe in April 1989 and is now listed as a National Benchmark on the National Aviation Heritage Register.

The sums that need to be raised every month just to keep her on the ground are the equivalent of building a display building the size of Newark’s every year ! Imagine how much good that could do for preservation in the U.K .

A much better long-term investment IMHO.:)

You don’t even need a live airframe to educate people about the Cold War – the education aspect was the real hook that secured the HLF funding, but as far as the project goes I believe it was an afterthought and is now just being used as a “plead factor!”

It wont be going for a few years,if at all as there is a rear fuselage also to go on the back of the cockpit.
So not sure about transporting it to Cockpifest.

I know it might be a long way from Devon but this year might be the ideal time to go to Cockpitfest; I took this quote from one of the information sheets that I know the event organiser Bill O’Sullivan has been sending out during the last few weeks.

“Cockpit-Fest is open to ALL cockpits, whatever their condition, with everyone equally welcome. Broadly speaking cockpits fall into various categories. Newly acquired cockpits that are about to undergo a restoration are especially welcome. We would also like to see cockpits that are part way through a restoration programme; as these show the public the second stage of a cockpits restoration ….”

Perhaps you could contact them via their website to get full details http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/contact.htm

The cockpit left the museum & went back to the owner ,the engine was returned to the Fleet air arm museum.
For many years not much was done with the cockpit untill about 5or6? years ago the then owner decided to strip out the cockpit for further restoration??
Part way through this the cockpit lost its home & was left outside .

With the extra work needed to put right the stripping out of the cockpit there is also work needed to rectify damage caused by Fairey engineering during there so called restoration.

Should keep me busy for a while.

Any further photos will be much apreciated.

    Andrew

Didn’t see it on the latest Cockpitfest update..

I am not questioning whether these projects should recieve the funding ( but I would question the £120million!! given to Wembley Stadium ), I would just like people to apply a little perspective with regards the £2.7million(i think) given to TVOC to keep the XH558 project alive.

‘Nit picker II’ here – the Wembley money is not from the HLF it is a different Lottery funding body.

That having been said wait until the 2012 Olympics really kick in and then see how all of the “good causes” suffer.

Sadly if the Vulcan project fails IMHO it will only add to the forthcoming squeeze on all of the “good causes” in general and the aviation sector in particular! 🙁
