Just a little more info on the QF-4 for anyone whos interested, as already mentioned the F-4 is a drone and it belongs to the 82 ATRS, it is also part of the USAF’s Heritage Flight.
There are four F-4s in the Heritage Flight with each one painted in a different camo scheme representing the four main camo schemes worn by USAF F-4s during its service life, the schemes are; SEA, SEA wraparound (illustrated), European 1 also known as Lizard and Hill Grey also known as Egypt 1.

Great shots Wys, the jet you overtook which was at FL400 looks like a HS/BAe 125, never realised the little buggers could get that high! 😮

PII, with regard to the Rhino driver having ‘fun’ in such a formation; two WWII era piston engine planes = slow(ish), one fly-by-wire F-16 (toy) = easy to fly, one real airplane (F-4) with no computer and a hell of a lot weight/inertia = a lot of stick n’ rudder and throttle compared to the rest of the formation! 🙂

Arthur, quite right, it was supposed to be able to reach a maximum dash speed of M3.2 following redesign of the intakes and installation of the water injection system, however M2.7 at 78,000ft (for about ten minutes) was the more ‘normal’ performance level and in the end the project was killed-off because of the threat to sales of McDD’s new baby, the F-15!

I bet the Rhino driver was having ‘fun’ keeping in close formation with that lot!

The proposed F-4X was designed to cruise at around M2.6/7 IIRC, although this was limited time-wise by the amount of water that was carried in the water tanks.

I’m sure they’ll perform re-heat take-offs, if you get some good pictures of any F-4s at the show – particularly the Heritage Flight – be sure and post them here for all to see! 😉

I agree, one of the few pieces of ‘family silver’ that hasn’t been sold off to the highest bidder!

Just to clarify things, BMW does NOT own Rolls Royce Aero Engines.
