The ‘fighter mafia’ within the USAF have been trying to get rid of the A-10 for years, practically since it’s introduction to service! The current efforts to get rid of it, like those before it, have absolutely zero to do with it’s ability over the battlefield. It’s all about money, more specifically, freeing up money for that horrendous abortion of a jet, the F-35! Arguments of ‘it’s a cold war relic/design’ just don’t stand up to scrutiny, it’s proved itself in combat time and time again. A better CAS platform you’d be hard pressed to find, the combination of payload and the cannon are perfect for the role, the cannon especially for plinking soft targets and moderate armour. Ask any soldier on the ground what CAS platform he’d sooner have watching his back and I’ll bet you a dime to a dollar he’ll most likely say, ‘The Hog…’

Very sad to see Mildenhall go, I imagine the impact on the local economy will be keenly felt. At least Lakenheath appears to be safe with the announcement that two squadrons of Joint $hite Fighters are to be based there from 2020…

P.S. Tony, this news might have got more replies if it was mainly just about the F-35, since this forum has long since become the ‘Keypublishing Perpetual Squabbling About The F-35 Forum’…
I can’t believe it’s over two years since I started this thread, and it’s still going strong! 😎 Thanks to everyone who has contributed!
Anyway, I figure it’s high time I add another image to the collection so, without further a do, I give you the King of the skies! (3rd TFW F-4E – Ex Team Spirit 86)

All withdrawn around 2009, but kept ‘live’ (engines and avionics) for a while longer. Now they’ve all been stripped of usable parts, engines etc, and the fuselages are sitting on the ground with the undercarriage retracted, gathering dust at Tabuk…

Can somebody clear something up for me please? What are the official type designations given to the Saudi AF’s Typhoons? Do they follow the RAF’s F.2/T.1/T.3/FGR.4 designations or, do they follow the old Lightning style designations, such as F.53/T.55 etc?

So what is the conspiracy theory behind this report? Maybe Lockheed has bought everyone off before their aircraft is even available for export?
There is no conspiracy theory behind that report, its just utter PR bollox…

All this back and forth nonsense about the minimum requirement now needed by the Dutch is just that, nonsense! The order for 37 is all they can now afford given the 4.5 billion allocated for the F-35 acquisition, the Dutch commitment to NATO/international ops hasn’t changed that much since the initial intention to purchase 85 was announced. They have even said that if the cost of the jets reduces sufficiently they would look to add more in the future, but still within the allocated 4.5 billion (yeah right…). Whichever way you slice it the Dutch order numbers are down to cost and nothing more, to suggest otherwise is naive at best…

Looks grand, and i’m so pleased that the awful, chavvy, sloping ‘Y’ and ‘A’ have not found their way into the ROYAL AIR FORCE titles!
