    I’m no expert, but intuitively it seems to me that a platform as heavy as the Flanker is not an ideal match for a medium STOBAR carrier and that under those conditions a Fulcrum-based platform would offer competitive or superior payload/range characteristics at reduced acquisition and operating costs.

    Anyone care to explain where I’m wrong in this?

    lol, what nonsense.

    Talking about scrapping MMRCA is one thing (I disagree with the proposal, but it’s not absurd) but replacing it with an F-35 buy? Yeah, right. :rolleyes:

    @ J-20: well they’re going to need foreign engines at least, prolly growth F414 or EJ200. Personally I would’ve thought a partnership with SAAB would be ideal; course maybe (hopefully) they’re already spoken for *cough* India AMCA *cough*.

    Are you sure that article/translation means what you think it means?

    If one of the variants gets a bullet in the back of the head it’ll most certainly be the ‘B’ variant…

    …In that case Italy and Spain better come up with a plan B (no pun intended) rather soon…

    Given the finances of those nations I think I have a pretty good idea of what that ‘Plan B’ is. Could be for the best in the long run if it results in increased pressure for European integration.

    I suspect PAK FA will be navalised if only because Russia is unlikely to want to give carrier aviation away post-2020. Alternatives for the IAF include AMCA, MMRCA and, yes, the F-35. For my part I expect India will be looking at a 4-carrier fleet by mid-2020s (2x40k ton and 2x 65k ton) and that Russia will settle for two.

    IN and Russian Navy are not the same navies, they use different carriers now and in the future. Naval PAK-FA may be too large for those small Indian carriers.

    Isn’t India’s second indigenous carrier (EDIT: Vishal) meant to be 65k tons, i.e. somewhat larger than Kuznetzov?

    Money shouldn’t be sneezed at! Esp. for a nation in Russia’s position where its expertise outstrips the domestic funding to make use of it resulting in constant outflow of talent…

    China gets Russian expertise, Russia gets Chinese money. Is a good deal.

    I assume the heavy helicopter is a modified Mi-26, not a totally new platform?

    Fingers crossed that it’s a brand new platform to put the CH-53K in its place! :p

    Rumours of Russian-Chinese cooperation on such a project have been going around for a while now, apparently China got interested in heavy lift choppers after observing their utility in disaster response. It’s nice to have the additional confirmation.

    I also echo a previous poster’s appreciation of the MiG-31 infos posted earlier. Fascinating stuff.
