I am surprised at that Hornet + 4 Sidewinder setup. I figured with an Australian bird it would carry an ASRAAM.
IIRC the department couldn’t be bothered spending the money to integrate it given that the SH is only meant to serve for a decade or so and that primarily in the strike role.
Mig-35 passes all test under MMRCA tender
mmm, well I don’t think there were ever any real doubts on that score. MiG-35 is a solid contender as an aircraft. Problem is that in the case of MMRCA that’s significantly less than half the story. I hope RSK MiG can find buyers for the aircraft, but don’t think this is going to be one of them. Still … wouldn’t it be something?
Seems to me that one way MiG-35 could be in with a chance is if India chooses to develop its western line of technology/dependence elsewhere, i.e. through LCA/AMCA. SAAB would seem the most likely contender there, followed by maybe Dassault…
Of course not! How could you fit $2 billion / sub * 8 = $16 billion (high estimate, unpaid for) into a $650 rearmament program!
Isn’t $650bn the total military budget over the decade, not the procurement budget?
Pfft, poseurs. Mozambique has an AK-47 on their freaking flag. And of course in Egypt you’ll find this:

But if the sub isn’t well hidden, if its caught in shallow waters, if its damaged and needs to surface, Or even in a situation where an aircraft does not pose a threat to it, but who’s actions are hostile. Think of unarmed, mark one eyeball patrol aircraft, snooping round where spec op’s need to are be inserted in a certain time frame(think pirates/drug runners having taken civilians hostage, rescue attempt going in or whatever, use your imagination!)
Yeah. 90% of the time it may well be the case that going deep or whatever is the better option, but there’s always the other 10%. Course it then becomes a question of cost/benefit, but let’s not make like there is no benefit.
Aviation Week – Australia Formally Approves Extra C-17 Buy
SINGAPORE โ Australiaโs defense minister, Stephen Smith, says the government has made a formal decision to buy a fifth Boeing C-17.
โWe will acquire another C-17 heavy-lift plane and we will do that as quickly as we can,โ the minister told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Australia already has four C-17s, one of which is now in Japan. Smith says Australia and the U.S. are the only two foreign countries with military aircraft in Japan at the moment.
Jolly good.
I hope NZ does go in for a C-17 or two at some point and that we end up with a joint strategic airlift force.
Money is always good. ๐
Is there evidence that the new helo will be smaller than Mi-26? I was rather hoping it would be larger.
This has been discussed at length elsewhere. Eurofighter now says that with TVC, the angle of attack for approach to a carrier deck can be such that the canards would not be a visual obstruction. Without TVC, they are in the way.
Is that all that TVC adds to the feasibility/practicality of Sea Typhoon or does it contribute in other ways also?
Gotta respect the ‘Halo’ but it really is an ugly helicopter. I hope the JV successor is easier on the eyes.
What can I say, I’m superficial. ๐ฎ
I like “Airbridge” from that list. “Atlas” is good also but would reserve that for the larger KC-Y/Z if that ever eventuates.
Yeah, it was seeing vanilla Hornets loaded up with 12 that made me think about the SH given that it has more pylons and payload. Surely it’s been done at some point. ๐
Nice. “Flying missile battery” indeed. ๐
Wait, we have 5th generation submarines now?
Actually there’s misquote on what the Ministry of Defence really means. I already said this few months back in Tanggo III Thread, that looking to original quotations in Indonesian, he means that in the next decade (2020-2022) he envisage TNI-AU will have 10 Fighter sq (then the plan Orbat of 7 sq that I already put up to 2014).
At the same time he’s mentioning he will add 6 Flankers to existing Flankers Sq in Makasar to make it 16 fighters (full sq). Somehow Journalist misquote that and saying he’s planing to have 160-180 Flankers (or 10 sq of Flankers).
7 sq of Fighters at plan orbat means only add 1 sq from previously 6 sq consists of: 1 sq of F-16, 1 Sq of F-5, 2 sq of Hawk Mk109/209, 1 sq of LIFT (Hawk Mk 53), and 1 sq of COIN (OV-10). Thus up until 2014 the plan is only adding 1 sq (that’s Flankers), whille the rest (Additional F-16, Super Tucano/COIN, and T-50 or Yak 130/LIFT) are for replacements.
So TNI-AU plan is doing step by step and not running ;).
I missed this earlier: thanks for the clarification!
Indonesia’s development over the next few decades is going to be very interesting to watch.
