If you don’t mind me asking Nick, what’s the software you use to make those line drawings?
My mistake, I thought the Type 45 had a space aft, presently occupied by an officer’s gym that could accommodate a second VLS. But looking at some line drawings now, I can see that it’s not possible.
Type 45 Batch 2.
Replace the currently fitted Sylver A50 VLS with the A70 variant and install a further 48 cells in the aft position. To those I’d add SCALP Naval, and in the meantime, add an AGM-84 launcher to the superstructure, pending the development of a new anti-ship missile. I’d also want to look into the possibility of adding a SeaRAM launcher to supplement the Aster 15/CAMM missiles for protecting the ship from close range airborne threats.
Furthermore, I’d replace the existing 4.5″ gun with an Oto Melara 127/64 and add Vulcano guided munitions to the Type 45’s arsenal, and drop Phalanx 1B in favour of Millenium Gun mounts in their place. However, in an ideal world I would prefer to have the Bofors MK.110 57mm rapid fire gun with 3P ammunition as my CIWS of choice, but I realise this probably wouldn’t fit in place of a Phalanx.
As a final touch, I’d apply these upgrades to the rest of the fleet, and order another six of the class to give the Navy the 12 they need.
Rod Hull’s comic timing does seem to be slipping these days….
BTW: Where do they come up with these silly names?:D
I don’t know, I’d still say the US beats them hands down on that front, especially with their snappy abbreviation obsession. Joint this, Joint that. The one that tickles me is AMRAAM though. Advanced Medium Range Air-Air Missile. What about when it comes time to develop it’s successor, would that be MAMRAAM-More Advanced Medium Range Air-Air Missile? 😮
..there has to be a line in the sand and this guy clearly rolled right over it.
Yeah, it’s called the shoreline, and his kind are usually found on the wetside of it. Greenpeace usually push them back over it if they find themselves on the wrong side of it though.
How about the deer?
Could it have been a Doe, a Deer, a Female Deer?
Just think, currently we have ETOPS, Engines Turn or Passengers Swim, now with the prospect of single piloted RJ’s and the like we have PLOPD. Pilot Lives or Passenger’s Don’t!
Agreed. PFI in my eyes was simply a way of haemoragging even more money we don’t have.
Currently attempting to get iTunes to recognize my iPod so that I can transfer some music onto it. It seems that every time I try to connect my iPod to my PC I have this trouble. I currently find myself considering throwing the damned thing out of the window. 😡

Quite frighteningly that quote is not from the author of the article, but attributed to this Reuben Johnson fellow, a Pentagon defence consultant according to the article.
Pretty worrying if the experts can’t get it right. 😮
9 Hours to reduce a 747 to scrap? Perhaps I should go into the aircraft breaking business. Gimme 5 minutes in the Captain’s seat and I’ll reduce any plane to scrap…
….Might only do it once though 😮
I was unaware England had bought any tankers…
…the United Kingdom may have done.;)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the UK haven’t either. They’re being leased via a stupidly extortionate PFI arrangement that’ll bleed future defence budgets even further. Thanks NuLabour/MOD, your treatment of this country’s armed forces has been nothing short of treasonous.
Well that could have been a gate agent rant worthy of watching. :diablo:
