That is exactly why simulator is required every six months, you train for it, practice it, and when ( if) it happens, you simply revert to training.
Well done to the crew,
Delta one is just to the right of 06L , delta 3 is just on the other side, after you cross 06L, ordinarily I would never be able to remember that ! just so happens I did it yesterday, we landed on 06R, and of course had to clear 06L, ( Cathay CPA 1 freight B747-2)
hope that helps.
Their relative connection, … well it would be pretty hard for most to get it, as it is rather personal, so here it is
The Beaver, first commercial aircraft I flew, ( some 20+ years ago now, ow!)
( It has a P&W 985 engine, the BEST round engine ever built, including jets 🙂 )
The Super Solution, and Gee Bee R1 both share the P&W 985 engine and are just amazing creations in their own right,
The Model Y, while that one has a Jacobs, can accomodate the 985, and just looks cool anyway!
( I could have also added the mystery ship, another 985, and a great looking aircraft)
The Pitts?? well my long time favorite was always Samson, :see below, ( tragically lost this month at an airshow in Canada, with Bobby)
Favorite in terms of personal desire, as the Beaver was still tops in terms of a working aircraft.
However, building Samson was not so easy, at least back in the late 80`s when I was so keen on it, as Steve Wolf had just completed his magnificent replica, so I got a Pitts instead.
next best thing.
Anyway, the basic connection, Beaver aside, is little airplane BIG engine, and the 985 is a recurring theme.
however, if there was a close second, third, etc, etc, these would be there:
The Laird Super Solution,
The Gee Bee Y
The Gee Bee R
and the S1S because it is sooooo much fun! and yes it is historic, by design anyway!
anybody see a theme in interests? 🙂
and some more, the exceptional, beautiful, DHC 2 Beaver!
there is not even a close second to me!
I too kind of take offense to that comment, “only proper aeroplanes”
The Pitts is in fact a “proper aircraft” as one with over 1000 hours in the various series of Pitts I never felt I was not flying a “proper” aircraft, in fact it can fly circles literally around what you probably categorise as “proper aeroplanes”
Bad timing as well to denigrate such a wonderful aircraft, with Mr Curtis Pitts passing away just 3 days ago, June 10th.
So, to answer, the Pitts would pretty much HAVE to be the only answer to your question, flown worldwide by both Civilian and MILITARY teams, it has entertained untold numbers of airshow visitors.
1:Pitts S1S, S1C, S2A, S2B, S2S, Pitts Model12, and all the modified variants.
2 Pitts, Aerotek, Aviat.
can you name even 1 aircraft that has survived as long, in the chosen field you mentioned, from the 40`s to present day, flown by thousands, won world aerobatic competitions, and still continues to excel in competition and airshow flying? No you cannot! not the Extra series, Caps, Sukhoi`s, One Designs, Giles, or any of the various homebuilt offshoots, none of which combine all of the abilities of the Pitts series.
Curtis got it right, a great designer and a fantastic aircraft.
not a “proper aeroplane” !!! what a ridiculous comment!
I still see alot of people mixing history and warbird, as if they have to collide in the same sentence, history is aviation past, not warbird aviation past! if so, then please rename the forum to reflect this.
That is such a great point! so Shorts built a scaled replica, in fact I remember pictures, I bet if that surfaced today, and a picture of the roll out was put on this forum there would be a good number of : ” burn it! what an abomination! what a waste of time, etc etc”
but I am still amazed at the level of dislike associated with these replica`s, just what is so threatening to you who are so condemning? do you think they minimise your precious actual manufactured examples? just why does this upset you? do you also get irate when someone builds a kit car that is similar but not actually a jaguar, Ferrari, etc?
Lighten up! unless the thing happens to quit above and plummet into your house, I don`t think you have much to worry about.
and to be honest, I have seen many many many aircraft built by Manufactureres that look a darn site worse that some of these replica`s, so let` not discuss the quality aspect.( like the russians say, “best ,the enemy of good enough”, a motto many aircraft manufacturers have taken to heart over the years, )
On the subject of Daz, who so many seem to delight in ridiculing, first off the guy has done more towards his convictions that many, he designed and maintains a website dedicated to his passion, he continues to voice this passion, in the face of what I see is mainly pointless critisism, and he seems to maintain a positive attitude, regardless of the comments otherwise, good for you mate!
OK, well thanks for all that, doesnt really solve much though, just like before. However, Flypast, how about a replica, reproduction forum? at least I would know that I would not have to endure multiple “the shade is not exactly like it was in 1943” posts.
Oh, and Delmar`s Gee Bee REPLICA is now with Kermit Weeks, and unless he has managed to wreck it in the last few weeks, it is still a complete aircraft.
Last, why do some of you get so worked up by the less than accurate 100 % replica`s as shown, ( Allens post) I see then kind of like artwork, eye of the beholder, I tend to favor paintings that look like photos, ( maybe no imagination) others like big blotches of colur and see all sorts of things in them. Take it as a compliment that someone so admires the original, that they wish to create a flying interpretation.
Allen:
I guess I have to explain this to you, as you seem to have completely missed my point. Did I suggest we “paint Cessna 150`s and call them warbirds” no I did not, and for that matter did I state that Italian harvard was not allowed to state opinions? again no, in fact it was his very opinions which prompted my post, kinda like,……. a forum discussion.
So, Allen, what exactly are you trying to say?
is that not the original form of “mach Buster” now owned and almost completed by David Rose. If so, then yes it will fly, and probably quite effectively as well, for what it is designed to do, race at Reno. There is a web site with new pictures of it almost completed, and guess what, based on the length of time this project has been around it`s Historic! well deserves a spot on this forum.
thats it! beautiful picture as well.
I watched this one going together, as I manage to get up to the Kimball`s shop in Zellwood when I get over to florida,
it was amazing to watch it become a Gee Bee, and they turned out their typical showpiece workmanship, I bet the real one never looked this good! 🙂
well I did`nt take the Gee Bee picture, but you can go to the site and see more:
http://www.goldenaviation.com/
problem is they started with all kinds of ambition, and now have gone very very quiet, they do not answer email, too bad as they had said they would kit the aircraft.
RE the Rocketeer, that was the Gee Bee model Z, built by the late Bill Turner, it was flown in the movie by Craig Hoskins, of upside down Pitts fame, who after getting out said NEVER AGAIN! ( Turner made a bunch of changes to make it fly “better”, but as it turns out another Z model was built by Kevin Kimball some years later, ( now in the Weeks museum) and it flew quite well, or so said Delmar Benjamin.
I love replica racers!
some really great suggestions, and a few dreamers as well! 🙂
heres a few of mine: when I think of replica`s / reproduction, I tend to favor something I could imagine could be completed by an extremely dedicated individual, including : ( no particular order)
Ryan STA ( in Dutch markings on floats)
Fiat CR 42
Boeing model 100
Curtis Hawk P6E
Beech Mystery ship
That Gee Bee Model Y idea is a great one too!
and finally I would love to see someone kit the Spitfire, ie like Flugwerk, say 3 High back MK 5`s and a couple low back Mk 9`s, airframe only, all sheetmetal, as like mentioned this could probably be sourced and completed relatively inexpensively in China, Poland, etc. I have seen the Kirkham Cobra`s now being produced in Poland, ( sold in the States) and they are beautiful, same workmanship, different subject, and I know what they pay for the bodies, it`s a steal!
I also visited the factory that built Stewarts P51 replica kits in Prague some years ago, they were quite capable of making anything in sheetmetal, shame they were 70%.
oh yeah, and just maybe an AT9 Jeep, very cool aircraft!
