Watched this, good programme, I was stunned by the fact that a Lanc is still in a bog in Sweden, That’s never come up on here.

I think a quick search will bring up quite a few threads about the Lanc in Sweden!. It’s a well known wreck.

At Wattishan there was no talk of the type going all together just dropping a Sqn we have to remember that the WAH-64D differs alot from the US model in that it has more powerful engines folding rotor head different comms set and defensive aids suite some of the US upgrade is more powerful engines and new blades

They all have the same rotor head. The blades are un-pined to fold back on all models.

So we’ve got a 7 page thread of people bickering and willy waving saying ‘I know more than you’ on a subject that is just a rumour and may not even happen! Yup, that really shows this forum and it’s posters in a good light!

Do we put it down to age and therefore confused memory? Quite apart from the factual points you make, what about the claim that the true story was well known in RAF circles but never made public? Never, in the last 50 years until now. It all seems rather fanciful as well as bizarre, doesn’t it?

I wouldn’t say fanciful or bizarre at all. For many many years the general publics perception of Bader was drawn from the the film and book Reach for the Sky. Only those who were directly involved with knew any different and it wasn’t the done thing to sully the reputation of a ‘hero’.
Many a great wartime tale has turned out to be not quite as people thought once it was delved into with a more modern approach and without the benefit of the good old propaganda machine.

I guess because they came into service in 1974, in car terms making them a classic, well for insurance purposes after 2020 :very_drunk:

Hate to be picky, but it didn’t come into service until ’76.
We had a great big party at Valley for “10 years of the Hawk in service”, all put on by BAe.

    This image is interesting…

…in what way I hear one ask? Well, as one sees, the panels on the aircraft are mismatched, different colours. During Red Flag, I believe around 2007-2008 or maybe sooner (it might have been before…), the RAF experimented with a different colour(s) schemes and one was they painted different panels on the aircraft different shades of greys, almost like an abstract schemed WW1 Battle Ship. They looked very interesting and I remember the schemes worked pretty well. However, it was a one off and I don’t know why they didn’t go with the schemes. They were more pronounced than the image above.

That aircraft just looks to me to have just come off a servicing. The ‘new’ clean panels are just ones that have been replaced (like the nibs) or just resprayed.
Just look at C-130’s with different colour panels on the leading edges and engines.Any Apache that has just come off a depth servicing after a hot sandy tour comes out multicoloured. Nothing at all unusual about it.

Minutes. Cutting tools are loaded into collets, tool height is zeroed on a special pad next to the tool ‘magazine’. Everything else is programmed in by computer, and once up and running the whole process is automatic. As has been mentioned by other posters, the longest part of the job is doing the CAD drawing.
We make a lot of our repair pieces on the machine and if we are lucky get a DXF file with all the info in.

We use a machine from this company… http://www.axyz.co.uk/
