it could be something as simple as its just used for illuminating the leading edge so they can see if ice is forming.
C-130’s have black squares painted on the leading edges so you can visually see the formation of ice. they also have a spot light each side to illuminate the inboard engines.
Well Done Pirate! Its pretty cool that your first shot on jp.net has done so well – 800 views on the first day! Bodes well for the future! 😎
Interestingly, getting my first shot on jp.net felt much better than getting my first shot accepted onto airliners.net. jp rules! :diablo:
Nice pic of the SAFAIR herc at east midlands, if it helps, that aircraft has been leased to, and operated by, Air Contractors for the last few years.
just type B-47 into google images, and you get loads of pictures, quite a few show the blue stripe on both sides of the nose.
there’s also loads of pictures on http://www.b-47.com
i saw loads at RAF Honington…… oh no, hang on, that was the firework display!
i’ve seen several pictures of hunters spilt in two in a similar manner, also sabres.
just editing to add a piccy….

The glazing on the nose seems to be different in this photo, but I believe this is the prototype.

and the engines are different…..
looks kind of russian at first glance.
Don’t hold your breath chaps, I doubt it very much. I know that certain permit-to-fly aircraft were allowed over London in 2005, all multi engined, but that was for a very special occasion (i.e HM Queen, VE Day celebs etc etc)
Whats the big ‘do’ over the Mall in 2007? Just because the VOC say they are going to do it doesnt mean they will get CAA exemptions.
PS, I’m still on to eat my hat if indeed the great bird does get it’s wheels off the ground, but I think my titfer is safe at the moment…. and as EN830 says, I’ll defend my right to be a realist on this forum instead of a dreamer:D
i suppose you’d better start eating that hat of yours, as i believe the wheels are off the ground as the aircraft is up on jacks! 😀
we do something similar in work with C-130’s. if they have to go in a tight space in the hangar we have things called ‘skates’. they are basically two joined platforms on castors.
we jack the aircraft up, slide in the skates, lower the aircraft, disconnect the nose gear scissor links, and then the aircraft can be moved sideways with a tug.
could it be a ring segment or engine mount from an engine nacelle.?
Every aircraft component, however small, has a part number stamped into it. You should find some under the interior paint. Try shining a light from the side at a low angle.
i wouldn’t have thought structural stuff would ever have part numbers stamped into it, at worst it would be etched, and more usually has it ink/paint stamped onto it.
1989 was the last PR9 solo routine. I cant recall any previous to that but saw many do various height recce runs, finishing with a max rate climb! WOW!
1990-1991 had a TT18 from 100 sqn fill the gap – good but not quite the grunt of a ‘9! Rumour has it the 1989 pilot caused a bit of stir at IAT ’89 (the very hot one!) After his saturday display, he was reprimanded by the flying control committee for an as yet undisclosed breach of the strict rules. He departed sat pm allegedly in somewhat of a strop , never to be seen again! If anyone can enlighten/ fill in, quantify that story, I’d love to hear it.
i remember that canberra turning up, it parked just opposite us (i was on the TWCU tornado at the time), and can still remember them opening the nose up to let the nav out.
i remember the crew standing at the front of it like the rest of us with our aircraft when the king of jordan did a walk through of all the active aircraft, we got a bit of a telling off though as we weren’t in uniform, just shorts and t-shirts as it was so hot.
i can’t remember when the aircraft left, but i have to admit i thought it was there for the weekend, as i can’t recall a big empty slot opposite us, but i could well be wrong, my memory of that weekend have several blurry bits due to various partys (including blagging tickets to the red arrows 25th birthday bash!).
i don’t think its the airfield that are making you wear hi vis stuff outside, i seen to recall its some sort of EU directive, that any outside work has to have hi vis stuff on. i think it came in a year or 2 ago, all of a sudden we had to wear hi vis stuff in work where as before it was never compulsory .
Not lots – only one or two from a contingency of 4-5 that now live here… 😀
Trust me. 😉
aaah i see, they keep flying over where i live (just up the road from lakenheath), and i wasn’t sure if they were visitors or just in for an exercise.
are they based at lakenheath, or have they taken over from the CH-53’s at mildenhall?
And has a very good public viewing area at the end of the runway. from the A11, drive past the main gate, continue around the perimeter, and then it is signposted off to the left. It is nice and close to the action and fairly active during the week.
just to avoid any confusion, its off the A 1065, not the A11.
(lots of blackhwks been in and out of lakenheath the last few weeks, fitted with refueling probes.)
