well we shall see !!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your trip will be absolutely fine.
But in this day and age contingency planning has to form a big part of planning a trip, especially if you’re a frequent flyer. One day things will go wrong and you end up getting bitten in the **** otherwise!
Great shots!
Today has been rather a rubbish day at Gatwick with quite a few cancellations, all NON weather related! BA have lots of flights down due to crew shortages, and both US Airways’ A330 to CLT and Northwest’s A330 to MSP went tech and got cancelled as well!
Hmm, a reduction in capacity between London and JNB is never a good thing, especially at this time of year.
Lots of people trying to get out to SA on staff travel are going to be affected by this one as the already tightly filled planes of VS, BA and SA will have even less slack.
I still prefer mainland european options over LHR I have never found the MAN-LHR link particularly on-time, as I experienced last Friday evening, with BD (my flight) late and BA having cancelled and delayed services. Two ladies sat behind me transfering onwards to Sydney were concerned about their connection they were on BA. (terminal 5, may improve matters), if i miss the flight in Zurich its down to Swiss.
My point is that that is exactly the same in LHR or ZRH. If you misconnect in either, the airline involved will reroute you. The only difference is you have far more options for getting where you want to at LHR than ZRH if things go wrong (which they do frequently).
Next year I am flying to Singapore from Manchester…………via Zurich with Swiss, one hour connection and avoiding a more stressful alternative at LHR changing terminals etc.
Unless your inbound from MAN is running slightly late. The MAN flight is a Fokker which uses a bus gate, adding significant time getting into the main terminal. Couple that with the fact that the MAN flight is habitually 15 minutes late and Swiss close their gates 15 minutes-ish before departure and you’ve got an extremely tight connection with limited options for rebooking.
Once you’ve missed a connection in a smaller airport like ZRH you won’t bemoan LHR quite as much as you did before. I speak from painful experience! :p
I think AndrewM is a big Westlife fan and recently posted in another thread that it was the ex BA/EAL 742 at Dunsfold, also seen in the Top Gear programmes.
I’ve flown American Airlines business class for more years than I’d care to remember…i’ve always found the service and the food and beverages reasonable… and the aircraft interior and exterior to be fairly pristine
Have you flown them recently though?
With 38 flights on AA this year under my belt, on all types and in all classes, sadly I know what I’m talking about pretty consistently… 🙁
Standards across all airlines, most notably those in the USA have dropped considerably in recent years.
hey,
thanks guys for your opinions on this. some are your suggestions are very promising and im quite convinced that i can make it this time 🙂 . Anyways, do you think first class passengers have a slight advantage than economy class passengers?? Or is it just the same?
Daryl
I think if you were travelling First or Business your request may well be more likely to be passed onto the captain, whereas in Economy you are more likely to be rebuffed.
If you’re on the Upper Deck of a 747 for example then there are practical reasons for this as you’re right by the flightdeck door.
This applies to an on the ground visit of course, not an airborne one.
I think it is about time that BA dropped the MAN-JFK regardless of whether it is doing well etc. Either sell it on or just simply drop it. I could see VS BD or DL starting a JFK link soon (Excuse me if DL already have it). VS could really give BA a run for IT’S money and then London Airways can get back to london
That completely contradicts your first post!
And yes, DL already fly to JFK, alongside CO to EWR…
Of course this only really applies in a handful of countries, largely the USA, the UK and Australia.
If you want a jumpseat ride on most other European, South American or African airlines, you won’t have too much trouble getting one.
As for flightdeck visits I’d say 90% of pilots are more than happy to welcome you in either before departure or after landing.
The problem comes when you ask the cabin crew (as obviously you can’t just barge into the flightdeck!).
I’d say its 50/50 whether you will get the “I’ll just ask the Captain” response, or the “Sorry, its not possible response”.
I’d be surprised if there was any “one big day”. Logically there would have to be two at least.
Any Fri/Sat/Sun in Jan will be busy and interesting down there IMHO.
Latest 195 (FBEH) arrives in Exeter this week & latest Q400 (JECZ maybe) passed through Iceland on 21/11
FBEH flew its first flights out of its new Manchester base today.
Don’t ever fly American Airlines then, if you think KLM’s interior maintenance is bad you’d have a heart attack on AA!!!
The earlier Dash 8’s have gone? I flew the eldest in the fleet last week, they are all still there.
Also a Dash is arriving every 20 days for the next year, there is plenty of scope for new aircraft. The 146s won’t be gone until early next year & the 145s by April 2009
I think by “earlier Dash 8s” what was meant was the ex BA Q300s, which have all gone now.
So EXT-LBA-ABZ with BE ends I take it from above, and reverts back to operating just EXT-LBA?
Yup, 29th March is the last flight according to the smallprint in the advert on page 20 of The Times today…
