Heathrow was pretty much shut after 8pm today but is now taking the odd arrival.

Interesting report. I’m flying Cathay in First Class in a few weeks so will be interesting to see if they’ve gone downhill up front like they have down the back. Their First Class suite does look rather like a genuine enhancement though…

    BA or bmi to Heathrow

    Heathrow Express to Paddington

Hammersmith & City Line to Shepherd’s Bush Market

Unless you have a frequent flyer card on either BA or bmi there isn’t too much difference between the two of them. LCY is a long way from Shepherd’s Bush so isn’t really much of an option. STN, LTN and LGW would take a lot longer so there would have to be a considerably lower cost than the LHR flights to be worthwhile.

There is no coherent argument that stacks up against this. It is quite ridiculous it has taken this long to get through. I’m sure we’ve still got several months of negotiation before anything concrete actually transpires for passengers though.

Are people missing the point?, nothing has changed, you can still check in on line up to 24 hours before hand and select your seat, the service hasn’t changed at all?, this is just an additional service that wasn’t there before, i.e. you can, for a cost, select your seat when you book the ticket that wasn’t there before?, it’s optional, and the usual service hasn’t diminished?????

Exactly, for the most part this doesn’t change anything, it just brings in the option to choose your seat if you wish to pay for it.

For now you have no option at all to choose your seat before 24 hours (unless, like me, you’re lucky enough to have a shiny card or fly on full fare tickets).

Its not even out on the jungle telephone,( Thats why I asked) which is strange to say the least
On the last internal flight in july LHR-GLA all that was offered was drink and a biscuit that was in the afternoon about 3pm

I’m surprised I’ve not seen it publicised in more of the usual places tbh…

Like you say, these changes have been implemented on the majority of sub 1hr flights across the network already, with the exception of pre 10am flights and evening Domestic flights.

Could some one point me to the source of this claim please as i havent heard or seen anything officiall or elese from BA about this

It was an internal memo to cabin crew, strangely enough BA aren’t publicising the decision, it isn’t something they’d sensibly be issuing press releases for!

On the 30th October 2009 flight US728 from PHL to LHR still has plenty of seats available. It is not sold out at all. Go on usairways.com and try and buy a flight from LHR to MCO on the dates you want. Funnily enough they are prepared to sell you a new ticket.

I’d get back on the phone and ask them what they’re playing at.

Flights don’t ordinarily sell out this far in advance, October is still a long way away.

In this, the first week of sales, the service is 400% ahead on its predicted budget and some services are already oversold!

    Fantastic news for BA.

The point is that Barclays, as a part of its business, flies a large amount of people between London and New York every single day. They already have a strong corporate deal with BA which gives them an excellent price on the LHR-JFK service.

Given the massive advantages the LCY-JFK service will give to their employees (as anyone who has ever tried to get between an office in Canary Wharf and Heathrow will testify) and therefore their bottom line, it is in their best interests to ensure the service goes ahead.

By guaranteeing a certain number of seats per flight, Barclays will get a lower cost per seat than they were getting out of LHR, AND will be getting a service that saves them money and gives them productivity.

The real risk for this project is that it is danger of becoming TOO successful and removing too many high value customers from the LHR-JFK services. We are already seeing a big capacity reduction on the route. A year ago all 8 flights were run with 747s, this winter it becomes almost exclusively run with 777s.

The risk for Barclays on the other hand is that they block book the plane and then let the seats go empty.

Overall however I feel that this is probably the most positive, win-win scenario that the industry (if not just BA) has seen during the recession and I’m glad some visonary people have encouraged it along.

What makes you think the DFW-LHR flight departs from A? It will depart from D. As for the MCO-DFW flight, that could arrive into any terminal.

Assuming your MCO-DFW is on time you will make the connection. Is there still a later flight to London after AA78? Sometimes there is one around 9pm. If not, then if you do miss the connection, you will have to resign yourself to flying home the following day, most likely DFW-ORD-LHR on the dayflight.

If your flight is delayed when you get to MCO, get the gate agents to rebook you onto a different service (via MIA, ORD or JFK) as they will be more than happy to do so.

Finally, make sure you get your AAdvantage miles for this trip too!

I don’t know anyone at BA except those directly involved with the launch that would agree.

Aimed primarily at the banking sector, this is the wrong market at the wrong time. It’s bad enough that they are pig-headedly carrying on with Openskies, without sending more empty aircraft across the pond.

    1L.

I’m not sure if you are aware but there is a contract with Barclays that guarantees the purchase of a certain number of seats on every flight. The numbers I have heard have varied between 30-50% of all seats on every flight.

With that initial undertaking agreed, this is most definitly the right time to launch this service. Openskies on the other hand has no such corporate undertakings…

OK, Qatar Airways dropped the ball on this one and didn’t behave quite as they should have done. Equally so has common sense completely evaded the modern traveller?

I tried enquiring about paying for a hotel out of my own pocket, but I was again even denied this information.

The upshot of all this is that I was forced to spend 19 hours staring like a mad thing at the floor of an airport terminal.

If Qatar Airways refuse to give you hotel information, how does that make it the end of the issue? In those circumstances I would have gone out to the arrivals hall, gone up to a hotel desk and enquired with a hotel (rather than an airline that is unlikely to have any hotel information) as to where the closest/best hotel was I could spend my 19 hour layover.

The clever traveller, having enjoyed his 19 hour layover in a nice hotel, would then have sent an email or letter to Qatar Airways with a copy of the invoice from the hotel and an impassionate, accurate depiction of events requesting a refund for the cost of the hotel that Qatar Airways should otherwise have provided for free.

I fail to see the productivity in the masochism of spending 19 hours on an airport floor and then starting a one man campaign against the airline.

Well, MAN-LAS was an A330, this will be with an A321 via AMM.
