So, let me get this right. Two fully laden a/c coming into contact with each other on the ground is a perfectly normal and acceptable practice, and one which should be dismissed by all and sundry as a โ€œridiculous non eventโ€

Hardly “perfectly normal and acceptable practice” but still a routine incident that happens all the time.

What next? News reports whenever a go-around occurs, or an aircraft diverts?

    Oh, wait a second…

Hasn’t been mentioned before because it is yet another ridiculous non event that the press has picked up on for want of something better to write about.

Nope, I’m questioning BAA’s wisdom in publicly inviting a large group of people to participate in an exercise in standing in the same place, so soon after the GLA attack… Maybe Al Qaeda like dress rehearsals too ?

I still don’t understand how it is any different from the normal day to day operations of all the other terminals.

Apart from the fact that the number of people in T5 “standing around” during the trials is going to be far less than the number of people “standing around” on the first day of normal operations?

I highly doubt they’ll be letting us all run amok through the buildings with no supervision or police oversight!

I have to say that given the recent event at GLA, should BAA be encouraging large crowds of general public to turn up en masse ?

You mean like they do every other day of the year with four busy operational terminals?

Fantastic location mate, you really picked a good one there!

I’m in a similar situation in Leeds now, totally by mistake! I only realised after I had moved in quite how good a view I have over the approach! :p

Weird. I wonder why this made the news? I can think of 5 or 6 FlyBe incidents off the top of my head that have ocurred in the last few months and none made the headlines.

    The wonders of the press…

Do you know what route the United Airlines 744 operates on, I would love to fly on it one-day?

It’s running on the SFO route currently I think. It can be found on all UA’s other routes intermitently though. They are however meant to be one of the worst aircraft in the fleet for Trans-Atlantic flying though…

Anyone know if Concorde G-BOAB is scheduled to feature in or outside of T5 ???

Not inside certainly. Outside, perhaps. If they can find somewhere sensible to put her once everything is up and running.

I’ve had an application in for every trial for some time now, we won’t get a confirmation until 10 days before though, so won’t know for a few more weeks/months.

The Leeds – London railway line provides just too much competition sadly. I took this on Friday night, and the journey time is a shade over 2 hours.

One of the reasons MAN-LCY has worked so well is because the West Coast Main Line linking Manchester and London has effectively been closed for the last few years, so bad have the engineering works been.

If anything over the next few years Leeds will lose London air links rather than gain them. LBA-LHR is a primary source of slots for bmi to use for Transatlantic routes. I already go to MAN to catch flights to the US, Africa, and elsewhere, and tbh by rail it is sometimes quicker than the horrendous road journey from the City Centre of Leeds to LBA.

LCY-LBA will always be desired by a small group of people (myself included. This route took me to Leeds for the 1st time back in March 2005 so its very sentimental to me indeed!), but the train is just too competitve sadly, especially with additional frequencies likely in the near future ๐Ÿ™

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an urban myth. The upper deck of 100(SUD), 300 and 400 747’s experience a standing shockwave immediately above them making it a noisier environment than the front of the main cabin.

I haven’t had the pleasure (yet) but is the Upper Deck quieter than the back of the plane? I appreciate the front of the Lower Deck is quieter than upstairs (except when the gear goes up and down, cor, what a racket that makes!)

I found these two pictures of A zone on BA 747s on A.net

Thankfully for the better! I shudder to think what a 12 hour overnight to JNB in those old seats would have been like compared to the newer ones. For a start you’d have 3 stops to get there as well I suppose!

Edit: That said, I do really like the flower design on the closet. Much nicer than the plain wardrobe doors I ended up staring at all the way to and from SA! ๐Ÿ˜€

I tend to find the situation is usually ranked by industry, and not by position within the company.

Walmart for example have a policy of Economy only for all employees. They have a large corporate jet fleet though, but even this they use when it is cheaper than commercial flying (which is quite frequently when time really does equal money). And any luxury idea you have about Biz Jets is shattered when you see their spartan Lear Jets!

However if you look at the law industry, even the lowliest person within the company is likely to be able to fly Business because the Corporate Travel Policy is a competitive feature when it comes to retaining staff.

Most people I know do have to contend with idiotic corporate travel managers however. It does make me laugh that with a bit of research and insutry insight (OK and a little bit of sacrifice) I can travel First/Business anywhere for little more than the cost of the economy fare, yet people working for major corporations are forced into the back because of corporate dictat! ๐Ÿ˜€

    Great news Adam!

Are you going to be involved in the new inter-airport-agency coordination scheme and/or EFAS? I think both are trialling at Manchester (might just be one or the other though I can’t remember) as I’ve had a little bit of involvement in these myself. They sound rather similar to what your job description entails!

Plus we’re delighted that once again, we’ve outperformed our competitors with our on-time performance. Not once, but twice.

To be fair, it isn’t that difficult when you look at the competition. ๐Ÿ™

I think the info has been mentioned before, but merged into some other bmi threads perhaps…? Anyway, I’m sure it warrants it’s own thread anyway! :p
