It is such ashame the political short sightedness of the politicians. I had Rusty Russell who was in the AVRO office with the president when the call came in to stop work on my show the other day and he said it was the end of 14,500 jobs all in one stroke. In return we got a useless missle system built in the U.S. which only worked if it carried a nuclear war head (its ok to detonate those in our north after all) and it destroyed the aerospace industry in Canada. You also have to take into consideration that the government bascially canned AVRO’s private interests when they had them change production away from the jet liner to build more cf-100’s during the korean war so all the company had left was the government military work. As Rusty eluded to after the show though Canada still does not have an all weather interceptor for our geography and climate so in the end yes cancelling the project was a huge mistake. I guess we could purchase some Russian aircraft now because that is the only other country that has similar geography and climate to us here.

That is really interesting seeing the depiction of what the site would have looked like. Were these missiles transported to the launchpads from a secure bunker or were they kept on the pads just requiring fueling prior to launch? How long would it take for them to launch a missile from a Thor site from the time of receiving launch codes?

Then of course security would be a major concern at military airfields.

I would suggest that the start of the decline began when we started
getting “event organisers” running the airshows, rather than being run by
people involved with the airfield. Necessary I know when shows
started getting really big, but then they started being run for profit rather than
as entertainment for the public. Perhaps we were just spoilt in the past ?

Then of course when the oil runs out, it will all be history. 🙁

Ahh this really burns me when I hear this as people on this forum should know better. The cost to run a show is huge between all the logistical items to bring the public on site and then the costs for aircraft and crew. To think that this should not be run for profit so as to fund a show for the next year is insane. Hence comes up the Not for Profit issue – Please give your head a shake because not for profit just means the board of directors paid themselves the lions share of the profits and then go begging for public money to fund the next years event. Ie. you pay for it in tax money. If you really enjoy going to a particular show pay the admission and thank the people who put it on.

Have any funeral arrangements been set yet for Jimmy? Or has the family setup any kind of donation in his name? Just wondered as myself and a couple others would like to send something to the family.

PM if you have further info.
    Thanks

Yes it was confirmed by the RENO Air Race organizers that it was Jimmy Leeward in Galloping Ghost. It is such a loss to the racing community to have lost such an amazing aviator as Jimmy. There is a movement on Jimmy’s facebook page to push the “likes” to a new record in his memory. He had started the post and had hoped to surpass the 500 mark today before the race, so I am sure it would mean a great deal to his family if aviation enthusiasts showed their support.
    RIP Jimmy

No that isn’t one of them, had not much luck with the Norwegian Consulate in communicating to the Norwegian veterans. The ones we have are all local to the Muskoka and Collingwood areas who moved back to the area after the war. We had really hoped for more involvement from the Consulate to get Veterans from Norway over for the Anniversary but it has been very disappointing as the governments don’t really feel that 70 is an important milestone. To make sure that no one would forget these two battles, this 70th Anniversary Air Show is an entirely private venture as no government felt it as an important enough milestone. To quote one branch “Come back and talk to us for the 75th”. That’s ok though because it really isn’t about them it is about honouring our veterans and the ones who never came back.

Hope to see everyone out at the show July 17 & 18.

Hi just a quick update and to answer your questions. Yes it will be a real 109e flying at the show from the Russell Group in Niagara Falls and we tentatively have a nice surprise coming all the way from Texas for the Anniversary, a Messerschmitt 108 which will also be flying. Will be great to have two Messerschmitt’s in the air over the weekend! We also now have the CWH Lysander coming which is a great addition to the flying display.

For the Battle of Norway we have a special Norwegian flight of Cornell Trainers as well as the CWH PBY Canso which will be flying. For all those interested it is our goal for this 70th Anniversary show that pretty much all the aircraft we have coming FLY daily so you can catch them in the air.

We have been slowly compiling a list of veterans also and we now have a few Norwegian vets, amazingly 3 German veterans in the area and a few Spitfire pilots. Provided their health prevails we will be having them out to the show as our honoured guests. For WWII vets who wear their service medals their is no charge and we have a special day for them also on the Friday which is not open to the general public if they contact us. Contact info is on the website at http://www.battleofbritain2010.com

    Thanks everyone for your help

That is great guys I will follow up with the contacts you offered. I am actually just looking for a single wing rib that will give the kids a taste of what it’s like. So I don’t need details on all of the wing ribs to make up the wings just one. Far easier to produce a qty of parts for the excercise.

I will keep you posted but those are some great contacts.

    Cheers

Thunder in Little Norway MOVED to Huronia Airport, Midland, ON

    *******************UPDATE*****************
Due to the inability of the Muskoka airport to accomodate the Air Show “Thunder in Little Norway” has been MOVED to the Huronia Airport, Midland, Ontario just a few miles to the west. To assist in making sure everyone is aware of the change please tell your friends to make sure they are headed to Midland July 17th & 18th for the Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Air Show.

We have added additional aircraft to the exciting line up of flying displays and look forward to seeing everyone at the show.

The new web link is http://www.battleofbritain2010.com

We would also like to thank the Huronia Airport Commission for providing their airport for the air show, a friendlier facility to General Aviation we believe would be hard to find. Without their support this opportunity to honour the veterans for the 70th would not be possible.

The count down now to July has begun – Hope to see you there!!!
