The Gnat F1 is actually an Indian built Ajeet, I think it came from David Tallichet at Chino who imported a load of them. I remember a few years questioning the gentelman who was happily painting it red and comparing it too a small colour photo of a Red Arrows Gnat. I tried to explain the error he was making and was told to speak the the museum director. Later when leaving the museum I managed to speak to a young woman, who dispite claiming to be in charge of PR was totally unaware that they had a Indian Air Force jet in the collection, I was assured that the error would be corrected.

For those who are unfamilar will the layout of Cosford, Hangars 2, 3 and 4 are the big ones on the airfield, adjacent to the museum. Hangar 4 contains the aircraft maintained in ground running condition, this allows students to practise on ‘live’ aircraft.
The other two Hangars are on the opposite side of the railway line, therefore have no access to the airfield, they are used a for basic airframes trade training.
Planes of Fame at Chino have listed on their web site Supermarine S6B, Macchi M39, Curtiss R3C and Deperdussen 1913, all repilcas, are these anything to do with the old Thorpe Park collection ? I seem to remember seeing these on my first visit to Chine in the early 1990’s, but dont recall them being on display couple of years ago. Are they in stoarge or on display at another location ?

SX-ECF was noted as preserved on 14/04/95 in the white / orange scheme shown above.
When I last visited the old Athens airport a civil registered DC-3 in a white / silver colour scheme with large areas of orange was parked under trees outside some offices (either the Greek Civil Aviation Authority or Air Traffic Control HQ) I would guess that it was previously used as a flight checker type by the civil authorities. I will try to dig out a picture.
Only been to this museum once and it is truely remarkable what can be done with a deicated team and most importantly safe and secure storage. The large hangar is surely the most usefull item in the collection and the I would guess many other groups would love to have such a place to store, restore and display there collection. Maybe it was just me but access and directions to the site seemed rather poor and I certainly got lost get there.

A great museum, unsual exhibits, well laid out and looked after as well as can be expected given the number of aircraft and volunteers available. Keep up the good work. The location next to a pub is an additional bonus. If you like your beer do forget to visit the village of St Peters, about 2 miles away, where there is an excellent brewery and shop, check them out at http://www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk. When I last visited brewery tours were available, well worth it and it makes an interesting day out for the ‘other half’

Couple of photos of N747JC ex G-ARTV taken at Oskhosh in 1994, was then ‘for sale’.

Hope the set of photos taken last year are of interest. The aircraft are certainly not in the best of condition, but I dont think they are ready to the scraped. The Drover is unusual and deserves better, the rarest is probably the Prince being an early short nose version. The collection British jets Sea Hawk, Hunter and Meteors could be made to look much better, however I know nothing of their internal condition. The F104 is a much rarer thing in the UK and it would be sad to see it deteriorate any further
Mention has been made of adding an airworthy Viscount to the UK. How many and where are any Viscount still in service ? Obviously any still working today will be rather tried, but surely easier to obtain an aircraft type still in working order, with a suitable spares supply than to start from scratch. Other British transports to consider would be the Carvair and Bristol Freighter still around in Canada.
Did the two Skackletons at Gatwick not come from the Tech School at Cosford ? They must have been moved in the 1980’s. Surely the RAF museum should have been given first chance to save one. Just goes to show that you can never trust a national collection to take care of their exhibits. Thank god for private collectors !!
