Concorde is national icon and as such I believe that the Lottery would look very kindly on any application which helped protected such an important exhibit. The only problem with Lottery funding is that they like to have ‘land mark’ buildings, aka American Air Museum Duxford, these cost twice as much as the simple ‘tin shed’ which is quite adiquate to house Concorde, Vulcan and Comet. Time is also a problem with Lottery funding because of the necessary competitive tendering.

As said in another thread Bruntingthorpe would make an excellent location if XV408 is ‘homeless’, I assum if the aircraft came from Halton it is still owned by the MOD and will thus be disposed of to the highest bidder in the usual fashion. As this will probalbly be the last oppertunity to obtain an RAF Phantom every effort should be made to secure it for a long and healthy future.

Nobody else bought Concordes for several reasons.
Because of the 1970’s fuel prices and the very high fuel burn.
The airlines wanted a bigger plane with more seats.
The number of routes was limited, ie it could not cross the Pacific and over land supersonic routes were banded.
NOT because it was bad idea.
Questions ?
When BA used the Concorde to Singapore, where was the refuelling stop and which parts of the route did they fly supersonic
Did BA / Air France run schedules services to South America, if so did they need a refueling stop.

Well lets hope that Branson can save at least two of the BA Concorde’s from overseas retirement. I think the aircraft for Seatle Museum was agreed several years ago and at least they look after their exhibits. I raised the same question on 15th October, does anybody on the Forum have expericance of such lobbying? Concorde needs our help.
“As has already been said New York and Barbados both seem odd locations, so how can we change the situation, as it needs to be done quickly. It is common knowledge that the Governement of the day paid for the Concordes and passed them over to BA for a nominal sum of £1 each. Therefore should the Government not be able to influence the final destination of these aircraft. If a peice of ‘fine art’ were to be sold abroad, an export liecence would be required, and in the national interest it could be refused. Why can the same principles be applied to the Concorde.
Has any body on the Forum got expericance of this sort of thing. Do you try to lobby your local MP’s or go direct to a Government department ? How about the national press ?”

If the MR4 programme continues, the remaining MR2 airframes will most likely be scraped. Maybe a better bet for long term preservation would be one of 51 sq, R1 ‘special ops’ birds, these three have recently had new electronics fitted, and I do not believe they are due for MR4 type upgrade.

Radar makes a good point, a preserved and well presented AEW3 nose, cockpit and fusaluge section would make an impressive exhibit. Althought not very pretty to look at the technology and the ‘black boxes’ still require recording and preserving. Just because the RAF did not want to spend the money to make it work, its like burning the books because you don’t like the story.
I belive a bigger mistake than breaking up the AEW Nimrods, was not saving the Comet test bed that used to fly from RAE Bedford.

Can you tell me exactly where this aircraft is please, and also are there any other aircraft at the museum ? Last time I was in Berlin , I went to Gatow Luftwaff museum, but I never found the Hastings, is there also a C-47 and a Chipmunk ?

Fairford 1987

Opps Too Big try again later!
Would one of the experts like to give a quick summery of what operation ‘moked’ was about ?

Surely the answers is that the crew and the aircraft had been chosen to appear in the original wartime film that was being prepared for release when the 25 mission mile stone was reached. The film makers must have had a good idea of which crew would reach 25 missions first, assuming that they survived that long.
This raises some questions
Does the above list include only successfull missions, ie how many missions were aborted due to machanical problems or failure to find the target.
How many other crews achieved 25 missions, and did all return to the USA, or did they continue opperations.
last, and rather sadly, how many crews were lost on their 24th mission.

The only preserved Andover is the ex 115 sq one at Cosford. Most of the ex RAF aircraft were sold overseas, some went to New Zealand in the 1970’s other have gone to various African civil operators.
The real shame is that no HS748, the civil version that became the Andover are preserved. I know that some 748’s are still working for airlines so all is not yet lost but I fear that a similar fate awaits them as did the last UK Viscounts. Due to a their value on the second hand market they will be sold overseas and probalbly stripped for spare parts. The CAA used a 748 for many years as a flight systems checker, when replaced its spent some time at Staverton, I always felt that this aircraft could have been added to the DAS airliner collection. A chance sadly lost.

Ashley your a very brave person to start this thread, I hope everybody takes this seriously and maybe we can make a difference.
to answers your questions
1) Simple low level caption boards to the front of the exhibit.
2) Interactive displays are good. BUT don’t let them become more important than the exhibit. All the things you suggest can be includes, rolling video footage of the aircraft from manufacture, to service and finally restoration would be good. However such displays should be to the side of the hangar, with ample space to stand (or sit) a 5-6 min presentation would be good.
3) Not sure how this can be applied to a large aircraft display. If it does work for the kids can it not be used in the annex buildings or up on the gallery.
4) Great idea. BUT do not clutter the floor of the hangar with them the Superhangar is a big place, use it to display big aeroplanes. Once again the smaller annex and galleries are places of uniform and models.
5) This is a differcult one. The answer is reserved yes, but maybe the engines could be displayed against a wall with models of the aircraft that they once powered.
6) I don’t want to see a display which becomes ‘stale’. Do not position exhibits so that it becomes impossible to move them around. Grasp the oppertunity to pull exhibits outside so as to allow everybody the chance to see them in the light of day.

If the story on the concordesst.com web site is correct onlt two of the five airworthy BA Concordes will be presreved in the UK. Their delivery dates are thus
27th Oct Concorde G-BOAD is retired to the Intrepid Air and Space museum in New York
31st Oct Concorde G-BOAC is retired to the Manchester Airport viewing park
Nov 3rd Concorde G-BOAE is retired to the Museum of Flight Seattle
Nov 10th Concorde G-BOAG is retired to Grantley Adams Airport, Barbados
Nov 17th Concorde G-BOAF is retired to Filton, her place of birth.
As has already been said New York and Barbados both seem odd locations, so how can we change the situation, as it needs to be done quickly.
