RE: BoB on DVD
RE: RAF Squadron Markings.
Hi Keith,
The story about 8 Sqd and the Magic Roundabout is well known, but have you got any detail good photo’s ? Did the aircraft just carry the name or did they have a cartoon as well, also any ideas as to the serial tie-ups.
Thanks DOUGHNUT
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
NO, NO, NO !!!!
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
Leave it alone Philo, Lancman(and others)have got it right. The best we can hope for is for TVOC to return 558 to the condition in which she was in before they set of on this foolish adventure. Its the only fair way to spend the money donated over the last few years. Remember the Lottery may still be a saviour if they are prepared to support the building of an aviation museum on the Bruntingthorpe site. We still need their help!

RE: Hendon B-17
Biggest problems I’ve had at Hendon, and others, are the ‘sunspots’ from reflection and the burnout from other spotlights in the hall. Also the non aviation junk that is so often placed around the exhibits. As for the B-17 in flight the poster is also available as a post card, if I can find it I will post it.

p.s. Have you tried the Hendon shop or web site for a photo of what you want ?
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
Hi Philo,
Yes I was attending airshow’s and remember the sight and sound of the Vulcan x 4 QRA take off from Waddington during the late 70’s, but unfortunately no photos. I also remember a display at Mildenhall, by XL426 (?) when she was almost rolled, to the total amazement of the American audience. If that makes me selfish that because I’ve seen the Vulcan fly then so be it. A preserved aircraft, of any sort should not be flown to the same limits as when under military operation, the stress limits would not allow for high speed rotations, and all of the other manoeuvres for which the Vulcan display was famous. You say the CAA have supported the project, how many times were the goal post been moved with the lightning’s?. I understand that the T5 project started at Plymouth by Barry Plover also had full CAA support, until the final paper work when new difficulties arose, I assume Arnold Glass did not buy six Lightning from the RAF just to stop the scrapman, he intended the fly, display, train and possibly even make money from them. Non of this is possible without CAA support. You may have guessed that I dont trust the CAA ! Maintain XH558 for the nation, so as the next generation can be proud of Britain’s aviation heritage, its designers and industry that produced the planes which fort the ‘cold war’ and in memory of the people who worked on and flew them.

p.s. Must get off my soapbox now ! Subject closed.
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
Let it go Phillo !!
Letters to the Lottery will simply go into the ‘sad loser’ box.
The whole project was doomed from the start. The costs involved in returning a very large and complex aircraft to the sky are massive, with go guarantee of success. Insurmountable engineering problems, operating costs, insurance, the CAA could all have caused the project to fail. We can only hope that the Walton family (who still own the aircraft) have the cash and resource’s to return the Vulcan to a taxing standard AND provide a safe and permanent home, as I believed they offered to do when they were given XH558. If we as a group want to lobby the Lottery or MP’s lets do so on the basis of trying to provide ‘bricks and mortar’ projects which will do far more for the long term preservation of British Aviation heritage.

Maybe somebody would like to run a poll on this subject?
Spend £10 million on one project or £1 million on ten projects?
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
I will repeat what I have said before on this subject. The whole project has drained valuable and limited resources from the long term preservation of the other exhibits at Bruntingthorpe. We can only hope there is enough money left to put 558 back to her fast taxi spec. and provide her with a long term future. This must include the permanent use of a hangar. Can the lottery funding for such a building not be found, we do not need an ‘fancy’ architects concept, just a simple T2 big enough for both the Vulcan, Victor and Comet.
Keep it simple and there may be a chance it will work.

RE: Science Museum annex at Wroughton
The site at Wroughton is ideal and ready for expansion, how about some lottery funding for a hanger capable of holding the larger commercial aircraft. It was a missed opportunity when British Airways retired their early model Boeing 747-100’s. Very few of these aircraft will have a long term future unless preserved undercover, With the second hand value of these jets still to high for museums to purchase on the open market the effort should be to construct the hangar today and then wait until the right airframe reaches the end of its service life, that still may be ten years away, and make the owner a reasonable offer ie scrap value. Although of American design Boeing 707 and 747 and Lockheed Tristar contained major British components ie engines and as such deserve preservation in the UK.
Other large exhibits could be a BAe 146, does anybody know where the prototype’s went ?, a RAF VC-10 and the Hercules W2, currently stored at Boscombe Down. Anybody else want to add to the list?
Also do not forget that the site houses a large collection of bus and other motor vehicles as well as all sorts or farm and industrial machinery. Expansion of the site would allow additional non-aviation exhibits to be included and given greater public attention.

RE: P-59 Airacomet
Still trying to sort out this scanner file/image size problem, but here goes.
The P-59B as preserved at Edwards AFB, taken on 22/10/93, I guess its still there. The aircraft is not with the museum but preserved on a pole out a rather grand admin building some way inside the base.

What a beauty ! wow ! To see the FW190 in the flesh and hopefully flying will be the highlight of 2003. Anybody got more details about he airshow at Munich ?
RE: Just for a change

RE: Pics to share
Hi Chad,
Nice Meatbox. You may be interested to know the full story.
Meteor NF11 WD592 was purchased from the Royal Navy in 1975 by Al Letcher, registered as N94749 it was flown to the USA by the ‘infamous’ Jeff Hawke. In 1988 the aircraft passed to Al Hanson, who returned the Meteor to the air, however by 1993 the aircraft was once again grounded and it is currently an exhibit at Edwards AFB Museum. The attached photo was taken at Edwards AFB on 22/10/93,
Hope this works !

RE: Sea Vixen G-CVIX ‘ Foxy Lady’ FOR SALE..!!!
When did DeHavilland pick up the Meteor NF11 (G-LOSM) or are they selling on behalf of Jet Hertiage ?. Perhaps a survey of who owns / opperates what on the jet warbirds scene would be usefull.
Anybody got any leads ?
Could this be other Great British Jet about to leave the country ?
