Just glancing through some threads and came across this one on Stuart Crosby Walch. In 1957 my late father purchased the Walch family home form Stuart’s sister Brenda(dec) in the upper part of the Hobart(Tas) suburb of Sandy Bay. The upper sun room had wooden door posts and on these posts were marked the growth heights on the three Walch children non of whom survive today. The marks stopped when Stuart left for England. Brenda moved to the small cottage next door when dad bought the house.
A while back I purchase through the BoB Society a brass plaque to be placed on the memorial wall in memory of Stuart. R.I.P.

Stuart Crosby Walch will be honoured on 21 September 2011 when The Hutchins School Hobart (his old school) will be presented with a Battle of Britain Historical Society School Plaque. Kristen Alexander

Thanks Andy. It is good to know where the letter came from ie police archives. I felt sure the author was not Stuart Walch as the letter indicates time in France and it looks like Stuart was posted to 238 Squadron before or just as 151 sent its small contingent of pilots to France. And if the author was refering to the 16 August bombing on Tangmere, well, sadly, Stuart was already dead.

I hope you do find an author sometime. The family would be pleased to know that his last days were so happy, spent with friends.

    messy history

    Hallo James

history (or at least modern interpretation/recording) is indeed messy!

Take the location of Sergeant Moore’s crash for instance. The 253 Squadron ORB form 541 states the aircraft was hit near Northfield. The form 540 states he crashed 3.5 miles south of Graves End. Francis Mason Battle over Britain (1990) p. 380 states the farm was at Northfleet, and Wynn Men of the Battle of Britain (1999) p. 358 and The Battle of Britain Then and Now Mk IV p532 states that it was at Southfleet.

Thanks all for comments and assistance

    Bf 109 or…

Thanks Andy. It was indeed Peter John Moore. He obviously believed his attacker was an oddly armed 109 but you get the implication from the orb wording that they doubted this but were not outright refuting. Mason and BoBThen and Now Mark IV both mention a HE 111 on the day but no time so I can’t tell if it’s unit was part of the afternoon action or an earlier one. Cheers
