leading on from this….does anyone have any photos of our Beech G-BKRN (RCAF 1500 or CF-DTN) prior to 1996 – she was at Cranfield for a while from where we acquired her..
Picture on the first post is very definitely the magnificent ‘after’…..these are the slightly grubby ‘before’, at Cranfield 1992.
This one?
Or this one?…plus some pics to cause distress from Cranfield 1992…
Cranfield 1992…last pic is the final wing waggle of the last public Vulcan display (so far…)
Sally ‘B’ (still as N17TE) at Finningley, September 1975 during her first UK display season….very nearly 30 years ago, an amazing achievement, to keep her running in private hands for so long.
Not wishing to be controversial, but my main memory is the manner in which she was displayed in those days…..at one Finningley show (probably 1975), she was flown up the grass, BETWEEN the runway and the crowd line at an absurdly low altitude, enough to make my teenage toes curl (and which would presumably give the CAA a fit if flown like that now!)
Its like the summer of punk never happened!!!
Blitzkreig Bop….The Ramones
I was concerned to see a mix of C1 fuselage roundel, A type under wing roundels
I really, really hate to be a pedant on what appears to be a superb restoration (and am perfectly prepared to accept that, in the chaos of conflict, ‘C’ & ‘A’ roundels appeared together), but, looking at Setter’s fabulous pics, the underwing roundels appear to be more akin to post-war ‘D’ roundels, with the red portion having a far too great diameter.
My other concern (apart from the colour of the squadron codes), is the shades of red and blue used in the roundels and fin flash – they look so bright as to be almost flourescent! Surely much duller tones (as in Mark 12’s pic of AB910) are more accurate?.
Still, these are nit-picks really, well done to all concerned.
Hmm…wouldn’t it be slightly more appropriate to be mourning the passing of Frank Carey, rather than debating the authenticity of a photo published by, what used to be, a great newspaper.
I once had the great pleasure of working with the son of Charles Lott, who was Carey’s boss in 43 Squadron during 1940…….small world.
It looks as though it may be the Fairy Battle.
B*gger, got it in one, before I could scan the answer!
Whatever happened to the Strathallan Maggie?….and a look at what is now Shuttleworth’s Lysander, over twenty years ago.
was that a flyer???
Certainly was, G-AWLW, one of the three used in ‘Battle of Britain’. Sold to the Canadian Warplane Heritage, and sadly destroyed in their hangar fire.
And let’s not forget the Strathallan Lancaster…and here’s a little quiz, what’s that in the bottom right hand corner of photo one?
And plunging totally off topic, remember the Strathallan Hurricane?
Any chance of anymore Mossie pic’s still hiding out there
How about RS712/G-ASKB at Strathallan, April1982….post auction, but pre delivery to Kermit Weeks.
Feel free to use these..my fave two seater at Middle Wallop, 1975
A great airshow for the audience was the warbird show at Coventry, about 1988 – but wasn’t that a disaster for the participants, as the organisers went bankrupt almost instantly and no one got paid?
I think most large UK shows suffer in comparison with Legends/Shuttleworth. Last Waddington I went to, for example, promised something like a non-stop seven hour flying display. Seven hours my a**e, if it had been as tightly run as Legends it could have been over with in about four hours.
And finally, the Mosquito solo display on 28/5/89
Second and final pass…’cool’….I thought….like to see that again, little thinking that I was probably witnessing a bit of aviation history. Did this formation ever happen again?
