LGW Hilton is one of the better airport hotels in the UK. It is particularly ‘crew-friendly’, with good crew discounts….from memory….a generous Happy Hour in the downstairs (Jockey?) bar, half price drinks until about 2200, 25-30% discount off food in Amy’s (Tex-Mex/American themed resteraunt on first floor) until 1900, and a small (but cheap) crew-only room service menu. All of the above are for crew, but maybe if your reservation has been made through Continental you may qualify….always worth asking.

However, available to all, not widely advertised, one of the little LGW Hilton secrets, is……small fanfare…..FREE FOOD! Downstairs in the Jockey Bar at 1800, free hot snacks. Be there prompt, as you will find impoverished airline pilots circling like vultures!

Apart from that, the culinary delights of the South Terminal (ie McDonalds)are within walking distance. Be warned, if you have your own car, parking at the Hilton is extortionate (£16 per day)….far cheaper to use the airport Long Term parking across the road.

And for a little nosey, try the Gatwick Aircraft Museum at Charlwood (immediately to the north of the 08 thresholds) http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/ but their opening hours are rather restricted.
Failing that, take a camera and sit out the front of the hotel….that’s the Hilton bottom right.

Love the air to air shots…. more please.

Been doing a bit of ‘formation’ flying recently…only taken with the small pocket camera, so not great quality.

Moondance, how true is it that the 767 is lighterto handle compared with the 757?

It’s very true. I tend to think the 757 flies almost exactly as you imagine it would – the 767, for its size, is remarkably light on the controls. You need to be careful on rotate on the 767, control forces are much lighter than the 757 (and tailstrikes are a very real risk on long bodied jets). The 767 is also very sensitive in roll at take off/approach speeds, due to the two sets of ailerons, which are both operational at low speeds.

I have seen some pretty bad landings on the B767 though, it musn’t be the easiest of airplanes to land

757/767 have excellent handling, and are far easier to land than an older jet like the 732 (very twitchy and relatively speed unstable). What is more difficult is to do a landing that flatters you ego on a 767. Due to the slightly odd undercarriage geometry, the forward wheels on the bogey hang lower than the rear wheels, so on most landings (mine anyway) the aircraft tends to collapse out of the sky onto the rear wheels when the forward ones hit the ground!

    don’t think this is real

I’m unsure…..it would be P45 time for a UK pilot caught flying an approach like that, but then normal rules don’t seem to apply to the ‘locals’ in the Med and Aegean (and the Canaries, don’t get me started on Binter again)

I think its genuine… Its very rare they use that end at CFU, but when they do they’re LOW. The fence, left, is lower across the threshold.

The distance from the buildings is rather exaggerated by the long lens, as the first shot, taken from the 17 holding point shows. The altitude, if genuine, is a bit alarming, as 17 has a highly displaced landing threshold (look at the arrows indicating the displacement in pic 2), to discourage approaches like this.

Extremely impressed with DSA.(but just for Grey, we were cleared direct Finningley by London!) With one bound, Peel have constructed a terminal far superior to Leeds or Humberside. Coupled with a huge runway (over 9000ft long, 60m wide) and a fine apron, I really can’t see it failing. I’ve heard folks moaning about access, but it only took about 10 minutes to get onto the M18 from DSA. With a direct link planned from the M18 though, the future has to be bright.

I am always surprised at how well some night pics come out…..hand held in the dark, perhaps they shouldn’t work (and in fact there are many failures), but occasionally you get a shot like this…Cairo after sunset.

Anyone know where the Jetsream came from that is outside the T shaped building? it looks like one that used to operate out of BAe Warton.

This one…G-BBYM. I’m with Rlangham, the collection of experimentals is superb, a national treasure.

I don’t know many airfields with pubs near the taxiways?

But you are thinking airfields that are still open!….about 150 miles incorrect.

I seem to recall that the Tucano was the least preferred option for the RAF training contract,…PC-9 was first choice, followed by the Firecracker, but, post-Falklands, the product of our ‘new best friend’ Brazil, just had to win (despite the fact that a substantial redesign by Shorts was required)

No drawings, but a few photos (and I would be very impressed if anyone identifies where the pic of G-NDNI was taken)

but how in the name of sanity can the Boeing brand be placed on aircraft that were built by another manufacturer in the past?
