Not a single sentence to lift the legal block for exports.
Maybe a native American speaker can alight us about your claim. 😉

    I think he meant this:

it permits the Defense Department to consider building a less capable version of the F-22 for sale overseas.

Although it could be interpreted in different ways.

There’s at least one Mini with a V8 actually

    *Facepalm*

It’s a real shame about scrapping them. 🙁

Would placing them in storage be too expensive?

Probably, the budget is stretched thin enough without storing old aircraft unless we were certain we would be able to reuse/sell them later.

Having said that I always admired the American idea of storing old aircraft for reactivation at quite short notice in case of a major problem.

When they say that it’ll be produced in Saudi Arabia, does that include the individual parts (e.g. radar, wings, engines), or is it just assembly of the aircraft from those parts?

I was under the impression it’s just an assembly line, otherwise we’d just have sold the design basically. All we’d get would be some training contracts. If they are making everything themselves then they wouldn’t even need us for maintenance and support contracts and we’d get almost nothing, which isn’t the case in reality.

Think of it more like how the UK purchased Apache, kits sent to a local assembly line.

Had another stab at it what do you think Grim901.

Also Jonsey thanks for that, interesting notes about length – 110 seems to be right.

    Nice.
What calibre gun is that supposed to be outside the hanger? I was thinking of a DB30 on each side of the ship, is that what you were going for? Or are they 50 cals?

Also I think the RHIBs are likely to be part of an SF package so would be stored in the hangar with a crane to lift them out…I think that was intention, but I might have gotten mixed up again. That way a separate work deck isn’t necessary.

It’s a good drawing though Stan, well done. I’m going to have to try a couple when I get the time, see what I can come up with.

eyes married to a wet c’untry gurl so eyes can’t.

I think Bristol would be perfect, it was after all the home of the original School of Navigation.

Move Dartmouth to Weston-Super-mud, that would be a real test of character.

Oh now you’re starting on Weston? Actually it’s a ****hole, well done. But to be fair it could actually be a good naval air station. It’s got the history (Westland used to operate there) and an old RAF base there too.

But the Severn estuary would be a decent place for a naval base.

I’d look forward to it, I could join the Navy without having to go more than 20 miles from home to do it.

    Scrap F35 program.
Use whatever learned in F35 program and complete F35’s EW program.
Upgrade F22, with acquired knowledge and systems.
Build more F22, with F35 budget (both F and A).

…and then USAF may get somewhere…

Congratulations you’ve forgotten about the USN and Marine corps plus all those juicy international contracts. Even if just A was cancelled costs would shoot up massively and most of the international contracts would go bye-bye.

+ USAF would lose the fighter actually designed to hit ground targets and would require yet another new plane.

If the US were to pull out now it’d cripple the majority of NATO’s air forces current procurement plans. But hey, i’m sure Typhoon would start doing some pretty big business as people sort to fill the gap.

According to the following source Saudi-Arabia seems to be interested in procuring another 72 Typhoons, if the current order goes well.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/article-1193766/BAE-line-new-Saudi-fighter-deal.html

Sounds interesting, though this might take some time and as usual everything might be subject to change.

That’s been mentioned since the first deal was signed. It might happen, chances are actually not bad, as long as the oil doesn’t dry up next Tuesday. They’ll be locally produced though, still a good opportunity though.

I don’t really undertsnad the role that the US uses it’s Frigates in, it certainly isn’t the role that the RN uses them. Anyone feel like explaining the US escort fleet?

    Thought it was in Bath?

Between the two isn’t it? With its own lovely railway station.

Stationing their lordships at HMS Properjob in the West Country would certainly seem amusing. But of course a number of them have already retired (on full pay of course to ‘reflect their invaluable experience to be drawn on blah blah blah’) to Dartmouth so that they can keep an eye on the young ‘uns and complain about standards slipping.

Defence Equipment and Support is split between Abbey Wood and Bath, forgot that DPA merged with DLO in 2007.

And yes Abbey Wood has it’s own rail station. And the West country isn’t a completely stupid suggestion. It’s well placed between Plymouth, Portsmouth and RNAS Yeovilton. RNAS Culdrose is much closer too. In fact it’s closer to the majority of the UK’s naval facilities compared to where it is now.

…Not to mention the significant defence agency and defence industry presence in Bristol. But by all means mock away. We’ll just cut off your cider. 😛

Thats a fair point. just a 76mm and a helicopter then?

    C3 i’d say:
    – hangar for helicopter/special forces/MCM. + Crane.
    – 2 x 30mm guns
    – 1 x slightly larger gun.

It’s cheap, still meets all the needs and isn’t too over the top for the role.

Obviously if I had the choice i’d choose the Venator with the CAMM, then it effectively can double as a frigate/C2 if needed, but I don’t run the MoD so i’m trying to come up with likely suggestions.

And it’s not so different today….Perhaps if we moved the MOD, or at least the ‘admiralty’ to lets say Bristol, we would get a different and (by inference)better class of officer to run the Navy?

The Defence Procurement agency is in Bristol. Take from that what you like.

I cant imagine that intergrating an Sylver 35 would be that expensive and add that much to the price of a C3. 8 Cells that are quad packed with CAMM would be fantastic.

A 76mm OTO on the front and room for a lynx and off we go.

Really would like to see 15 or so of these produced. When the next Labour government comes in after conservatives you can bet the first thing they will do is begin selling off the fleet again.

I think it would be fairly expensive. It certainly would be more expensive and complex than they want C3 to be. It won’t happen and I don’t really want it to. If a C3 needs CAMM then somewhere along the way, someone has cocked up and sent either the wrong ship or sent it too far from the fleet.

Turning them into bombers ? Why not. After all the airframe was originally designed that way. But it would require a major change in the underfuselage configuration to have it identical to the IDS version’s…

Plus, it would require the replacement of the current avionic by a dedicated one…

BTW: I wonder if it would be possible to replace the ADV’s engines by the Typhoon’s. For sure it would help to carry really heavy payloads…

The undercarriage is actually different on the F3, it’s been stretched so it would never be identical to the IDS.

I don’t think it’d be feasible to put a Typhoon engine on them either. It’d be like shoving a massive engine in a mini.

I hope the maintainers like to clean the mud off Talarion’s EO turret. Placing it behind the main gear is very poor planning.

How muddy are your runways over in LA?

I’m yet to see a paved runway that gets muddy often.

I like the look of this UAV. The Predator/Reapers are ugly by comparison. The only think that’ll beat it is Taranis.
