The Few grow fewer.
Particularly sad as I’ve been reading Fighter Boys by Patrick Bishop this last week. If you’ve not got this book, do try and get hold of it. It’s very well written and however much you think you know about the Few and the Battle of Britain, it’ll add to it. Got a copy in Asda for £9…….a real steal. And find out what Sir Christopher thought of Galland!!
We must cherish this band of brothers while we can.
Does anybody remember, or know the history, of the Hornet that was on wooden poles in a “crash” situation at the Paradise Road (I think….it’s a long time ago) civil defense site in Devonport, Plymouth, in the 60’s. If I remember correctly (I used to pass it every day on the bus, going to school) it was substantially complete then. Wonder where it went?
Well, as said already, so many, but for a start, winning the draw for a flight in the Shuttleworth Tiger (after umpteen tickets over many years, I hasten to add). Went out to Cardington, round the hangars and then some aeros before pottering back to OW.
Another magic moment was when Neil Williams flew a circuit in the Bleriot, but couldn’t complete it and landed in a field short of the runway. By the time he got back to the airfield, Roger Hoeffling, that most urbane of commentators, had already organised a whip round among the crowd and raised a considerable amount of dosh towards any repairs that might be needed.
Neil Williams displaying ANYTHING..but particularly the Spitfire, and aerobatics in the Tiger Moth including a falling leaf manouevre. What an irreplaceable loss.
Silver wings against a deep blue sky, summer evenings, sunsets. What a magical place it is.
Yes, the Tally Ho would be much too close to the airfield….no time to get the old MG TC properly warmed up and nowhere to exercise the labrador !
Keep ’em coming, guys
You can still jump your horse across the rear fuselage of a Jet Provost on one of the horseriding trails at the airfield. Well each to his/her own thing!!!!! That’s Mrs Slicers horse, of course.
I remember living on the married quarters patch at Culdrose when I were a small lad, and what is now Flambards was the Captains residence..a nice house at the end of a lane at the edge of the airfield if my long term memory serves me right. Doesnt sound like a change for the better to me. Moral of the story..never go back to your childhood haunts methinks.
Speaks volumes about the security of Chequers with respect to potential airborne attack, doesnt it?
Hmmmm…. buying one of these may be the nearest we get to having an ex-RAF warbird!
oh no, another thread hijacked by the mysterious Janie. Come on guys let everyone in on the joke.
Piper Cub in Yorkshire owned by a plod……….G-FUZZ
and who owns G-ROPE????????????
Someones building a flying replica of the MB5 in the USA ,based on a Mustang airframe. That’ll be nice to see (if and when).
Fantastic photos gyp. Now we just need some text and snaps from one of the guys at Kill Devil Hill, Kittyhawk in 1903 to complete the thread!
I can’t help thinking there’s a great opportunity for the Duxford re-enactors here……………Susannah York on the cowling of a Spitfire……..hmmmmm.
Neil Williams flying the Spitfire at Old Warden. Sheer magic.
And heres one of the trials Buccaneer at Culdrose…..the negative is almost as old as me, hence the wrinkles and spots.
