You don’t know just how much a great friend of mine loved this photo. He’s a retired TWA captain and used to be based at LAX driving 1011s. You made his day when I forwarded him the link.

Off thread, he loves telling me about the BA crew in the late 70’s who got a bad ATC instruction on approach to JFK and replied with ‘We can do that but we can’t bring the aircraft’, and thousands of other stories. He should write a book.

Some of this difference will be because the A330 is also in competition with the 777 (and the 767), so Airbus customers have more than one option.

Basically the aircraft were introduced at different times and the newer one should be superior. The latest 340s look like they redress the balance somewhat.

I would guess that ETOPS restrictions will have something to do with the 340’s appeal.
