Agreed. The only remotely likely candidate for this would have been when the Super Beluga was being developed, but that’s well uder the bridge now.

In all seriousness I’m fairly certain airbus WILL need to update at least the A330 once the 7E7 is available. And if Boeing do secure a contract that will restrict the engines for the 7E7 to the 7E7, then airbus won’t be able to sling a couple of them under the A330’s wings and claim its better.
Besides, Boeing have a new CEO and have already started getting agressive with prices (the 7E7) I beleive Boeing are about to start a new campaign.
Agreed on all three points.
A330 – I think they’ll need to discount it too, but Airbus are pretty good at this.
On the engines though, Boeing have said that only two of the big three will be allowed to supply for the 7E7. I’m sure the one that is left out will be happy enough to talk to Airbus.
If the dollar stays devalued (and I think it would be wise for the US to keep it this way) the Boeing will not need to cut prices too much. There’ll still be the political pressures on US carriers – just like on European carriers to buy Airbus – and their aircraft are cheaper to international carriers than they were.

Boeing too, probably.

Well he would say that wouldn’t he? He’s hardly going to say ‘The 7E7 may kill our A330 and no-one wants the A380 and we’re cacking ourselves is he? (not that I think for a moment that the 7E7 will seriously harm the A330, nor that the A380 will flop)

Not quite so. BMI do too on direct flights (except transatlantic) and they are often cheaper than the LCCs.

321 is £58m… It’s just a few meters more fuselage and four more doors.
At this morning’s exchange rate a 7E7 would be £65M!!!
I think that’s cheap.
Bear in mind that this rate won’t last forever though.

Yes, I think the BMI scheme is excellent, especially the reflective blue BMI logo on the forward fuselage. It looks amazing when the sun catches it.
Yes it does.
I was a bit saddened by the demise of the old c/s until approximately 0.5 seconds after I saw the new one for the first time. It really has a ‘WOW’ factor.

If that price sticks, thats gonna be one heck of a bargain
Yes it is. If its operating costs are as Boeing claim too, I would say the A320 series has some serious competition on its hands too. Maybe the LCCs will also be a big customer.
Conspiracy type theory:
This price and the end of production of the 757 are linked – Too many newer 757s around at introduction would abstract from early 7E7 sales, while this price forecast will help avoid the A321 becoming the standard 757 replacement in the meantime.
If so, this is smart business on Boeing’s part imho. Look forward to seeing Airbus’s reaction.

Hmmm,
Against about £148M list for an (admittedly larger) A330-200 this seems pretty good value as an A-310 / 767 replacement.
Mike
Edit: $148M.
Oops
Another example of an excellent c/s being replaced by another excellent one is bmi, imho.

A housing estate.

BTW, there were two reasons I eventually suspected a model:
1. No ground on either photo and length/width ratios that suggested cropping.
2. This one will mark me as a real saddo, but I couldn’t find another pic of a Thai 330 without the P&W badges on the engines and the Star Alliance logos.
