As much as I enjoyed the pic of the Sukhois in US Navy markings, and all the discussions, the xenophobic mentality of American security people would never let it happen. You see how quickly the Kfir’s were retired — not because they weren’t needed, but because they made people uncomfortable, as stupid as that is…

I’d love to see our Navy buy a bunch of bare SU-30 airframes, then re-equip them with US-specific internals, just to help replace the A-6/A-12 in the bomb truck role. After all, Hugo Chavez could have bought MiG-29 point defense fighters, which would have been the “safe” and non-threatening option. Instead, he bought SU-30s, which are long-range, capable and destabilizing threats to all Venezuela’s neighbors.

But then, what do I know? I’m just a poor civil serpent 99 levels removed from the decision-making areas…
