    @PhantomII

IMHO, the answer you are looking for canโ€™t be given that simply as you already know, but rather requires a study (with in-depth analysis of the current European demographic characteristics as its core). As the mods have pointed out the questions, though honest, might be too sensitive.

European countries, although sharing many similarities, are still independent states. Many of them have retained some unique characteristics and thus large parts of their respective populations may look at a common (European) problem differently. As a result of this you may get contradicting conclusions from citizens of different countries that may seem quite reasonable from their standpoint.

    Dammit, everything’s taking off! AW159 –

Why are 159’s exhausts faced upwards?

What (advantages) are they getting with this solution?

    When talking about take off:

An old Gripen video posted on youtube by signatory (note that the plane is armed, looks to me like 4 AMRAAMs and 2 Sidewinders).

    No worries.

BTW, did I say that I’m a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I should be more careful when talking to you from now on. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh well, it could be worse, you could be policing our grammar.:D

God forbid ๐Ÿ˜€ If he was a mod, after a bad day he would have instantly banned half of the forum ๐Ÿ˜€

    Really, me too.:)

Sweet Lord, there are two of them now ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Truth is, no one knows how inactive or active Legenda is. An interesting fact, however, is that the Granit is equipped with active-passive-inertial navigation systems, and is supersonic. This would allow it to be used at maximum range with fairly high efficiency assuming a target is found by any other asset.

Which other assets have the ability to acquire a target at long range (about 600km)? An Tu-142:confused:

I simply love to see this old baby flying. As we don’t get a chance to see it flying regularly anymore it appears more exciting every time a new photo of it gets published on the net. Reminds me of Sharon Stone. Getting old but still remains gorgeous.

    Thanks for the photo flex.

OK guys, my bad. As the English is not my mother tongue I used the wrong word. Thanks for the correction swerve.

Is there anything that can be said about the Granit and its reliance to Legenda, or the missile can hit a target without it?

Where are Jonesy and RSM55 when you need them? ๐Ÿ™‚

Unless he’s talking about using the missiles in some sort of ground attack role (do they have this function?), but there’s a name for that – murder.

Well, every time when you are using a weapon, and result of your action sees people killed (be it enemy soldiers or civilians) you are committing a murder. You may call it elimination of enemy forces or collateral damage, it is still a murder.

BTW, when mentioning the Granit, is Legenda deactivated and if it is can the Granit be successfully employed without this system?

I very much doubt it. One of the objectives is to produce the aircraft here (or at least a big chunk of it). Option for a single design optimizes the “economy scale” (economia de escala, not sure how to translate that, does that make sense?)

Economy of scale. Yup, it very much makes sense as everything else (ie. split order) would be a waste of resources.

You can’t track via satellite. Satellites in low earth orbit (which is where recce satellites live) have a narrow field of view and predictable orbits. A CVBG can arrange not to be where they will be seen by a satellite.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Shadowing via SSN – well, how many SSNs are there available for shadowing CVBGs?

I don’t know how many would be up to the task to be honest, but guessing that the US Navy wouldn’t send all of it’s carrier strike groups all together – as they would look as one big target – and also guessing that some of them would be kept in reserve, it shouldn’t be a big problem for the Russians to find adequate number of SSN’s for the shadowing purposes.

Can you be sure that your SSNs will remain undetected, during this long period of shadowing? If not, then what you have done is guarantee that the first casualties of the war will be your SSNs.

Can you be sure about anything in a war, Swerve?
Every time somebody steps on a battlefield takes a certain risk. Even when an operation seems almost harmless for the attacking force, it could always turn out into a nightmare.

How would they inform you of their whereabouts, & hence that of the CVBG, while remaining undetected?

    They’d send a pigeon I guess ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, I am not so well acquainted with the naval communication techniques, if there are passive modes to transfer a msg and remain undetected  Or ELINT/SIGINT ships/birds are capable of picking up everything that emits in their area of operation?

Or are they shadowing in order to attack when given the signal?

Well, that was one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind when I was writing my question. Could be a tactic in case if she (an SSN) survives the “trip” and remains undetectable till she receives the signal.
