Well, EE, he’s just trying to save PAK-FA news thread from total demise, as the man with billion degrees is running the show there 😀 I don’t wanna reveal who the wisest guy on the forum is, just visit the PAK-FA thread and enjoy it :highly_amused:
Guys, any news of the Ka-62 or its militarized version? I read somewhere that it should start with test flights very soon.
Does it have a blessing from the military/government?
Is there a real need for this bird? (from mine standpoint there is, but again I am neither the RuAF or the Russian Ground Forces)
Will they enlarge the cabin, use Russian made power plants?
At the end of the day, I don’t get it how this conversation steered in this direction. I followed first posts when all looked fine. It started with some kind of thobbes’ review of Chinese air power. I visit it after several days and we have a $hitstorm at its best – what could’ve been constructive thread it diverted in million directions. I think we should have more mods, to clear all the BS and prevent us from constantly steering away from the topic 🙂
There were days when I enjoyed reading about various topics at the Keypub. Now, I get annoyed. There is so much insolence not supported by knowledge or facts, and that is really devastating. 🙁
Where’s the PROOF?
You don’t have anything except nationalistic claims.
You are the one who claimed at first that the Russian Army had numerical superiority, and not the TR1. Therefore, you should’ve brought up the evidence (the ORBAT or whatever credible info).
Have you ever read this? http://www.cast.ru/files/The_Tanks_of_August_sm_eng.pdf
In case you didn’t, please read it. It is the most detailed and credible publication on the 08/08/08 conflict so far.
There, you will see which Russian troops were present at the time of the attack (peacekeeping forces and their equipment). Which Georgian units conducted the assault, which Russian units first came to help… and what is most important for this conversation, you will see when the Georgians started to flee (and who had numerical superiority at that moment).
Eagle, not yet. But found one of an RAF GR1 with a WE.177:
I already posted that photo today (post #20) but it seems nobody noticed that.
So, anyone have a pic of a GAF Tornado with B61?
I’ve been looking for it few years ago, but this one with WE.177 appears as the only photo of the bird with nuclear weapon (and it isn’t even a proper photo but it looks like as it was taken from a video).
I downloaded this one few years ago – I knew you would ask for it one day :love-struck: :highly_amused:
Joke aside, there are very few photos of this bird with nuclear ordnance on the net (taking into consideration that WE.177 had been retired by 1998).

Like ?
Do you really have to ask him that :highly_amused: Finally, I for sure know that our dear Trident is an Antonov employee :dev2:
I’ll try to become serious now :p
Do we finally know which defensive weapons will be placed on the Vladivostok and the Sevastopol?
It’s just two different routes really. From what I gather katran is some kind of proto-Slavic for something (like soil) seeping with a thick dark fluid, tar-like, wet coal, like bitumen or what have you. For reference:
http://www.slovopedia.com/22/202/1634761.htmlI don’t know of any contemporary Russian word that directly traces back to that particular piece of etymology but it seems to be incredibly old and well established in certain Slavic contexts.
As far as the Ka-52K is concerned the name is obviously taken from an order of sharks (Squaliformes) that are called katran in both Russian and Ukrainian (a word that is probably derived from the Greek word for the same shark, κεντρόνι/kentroni, which I would guess, I’m not entirely sure, itself derives from the term stinging/to sting – κεντύ, as the sharks in question tend to possess stinger-like venomous spines).
But venomous spines aside, these sharks are tiny and not very intimidating. The venom in question is mild as well, bee sting-like tops. Then again a certain amount of modesty is always good, quite unlike the mighty dragons and blades of thunderous glory that we keep hearing about. Is it just me or does that kind of have an effect opposite to what is (presumably) intended? :p
My Goodness Doctor, I enjoyed reading this 😀 :p
Is this a really good PS or the real deal? 🙂
And if it’s the real deal, is it the U or just repainted regular A-50?
Yes it is.
The first Ka-62 was civilian version of the Ka-60 (military version). Military version first flew in 1998 and the program was ongoing at a slow pace till one of the prototypes crashed. In the meantime, the “original” Ka-62, never flew. But, it lately evolved into something more modern and should fly this year. New militarized version of this evolved Ka-62 is in the pipeline (for both VVS and VMF) and should follow its civilian sibling if everything goes as planned.
Would this be the Pak-fa compatible missile or is there still more to come ?
Yes, as both haavarla and Berkut kind of confirmed, the RVV-MD a.k.a K-74M will be the main (and only for some time to come) short range missile to equip the PAK-FA. As you can see in that Jane’s article, there had been other short range missiles in development (early stages) meant for future generation fighters but their development has been terminated due to to fact that deeply modernized R-73 has surpassed all expectations.
I don’t think so
The improved R-73 variant, which at one time was called the R-74 and is now being offered for export as the RVV-MD, “is everything that a close-combat AAM should be in terms of performance,” the designer said.

R-74/K-74M is the same WVR RVV-MD or a new missile ?
AFAIK it should be the same missile.
I’m lucky enough to be around Salon on Thursday, Friday this week. Is there any chance the Patrouille will be up practicing?
Any help gatefully received.:)
I’m not sure for the Patrouille de France but I’ve seen some regular Adl’A Alpha Jets doing some stunts while I was passing by. One of them was flying so low and slow over the highway that I was able to see its serials. Luckily I wasn’t driving, otherwise I would have crushed into somebody.
