Yup, the Collings Foundation were going to get the last Thud at AMARC, which was considered the best example left for returning to the air……..but the DoD/USAF jobsworths got wind of it and ordered the airframe be cut to prevent it being returned to the air.

Very little chance now of a Thud getting back in the air.

How ironic that the US Govt did this and yet were quite happy to let two Su-27’s be imported from the Ukraine this year for the purpose of being allowed on the civilian register……….

Typical DoD to be totally ignorant and hypocritical.
Civilian jet warbirds are appearing more and more worldwide and they want to reject the THUD?

Hell lets just let it all go to waste out in the desert sun…. 😡

The article is very incomplete in its details….

Um… considering he was “just” the co-pilot….. where was the captain at this stage? asleep?

The article is just one of those scare mongering media reporting which somehow fails to mention the full story…..

A 747 carries TWO crew. Were both crew over 65? Were the airfield markings up to ICAO standard?

Great journalistic talent at work as usual

Are you saying the US embargo is to blame then?

I hardly think that Iran has “poorly trained” crews or ancient equipment…
There are dozens of third rate airlines world wide who still fly worldwide is older aircraft and more pityful conditions.

The fact remains that people died…. and that the cause of the accident will probably never be known in the “west” simply because its “Iran”. The lack of media coverage when a disaster or major accident occurs outside the “western” world reaks.

Its not news worthy simply because it may show they are human after all…

Actually needs some updating as im sure it was written while things were a bit unclear….

The aircraft had overshot the runway and hit a perimeter wall, the only fire reported was post crash….. Picture on the link below shows the cockpit section totally crushed.

17 killed in Iran plane crash
By Middle East correspondent Anne Barker and wires

The accident reportedly occurred as the plane was landing at the international airport in Mashhad (AFP: Mehdi Ghorbani)
At least 17 people have been killed and more than 20 injured when a passenger plane in Iran overshot the runway and slammed into a wall.

The Iranian Aria Airlines jet crashed just after landing in Iran’s second city of Mashhad in the country’s north-east.

It overshot the runway and ploughed into a perimeter wall, before hitting power lines.

The plane then caught fire. The Russian designed Ilyushin aircraft was carrying 153 passengers.

Iran’s deputy transport minister said the airport tarmac was only short and the plane had landed in the middle of the runway instead of the beginning.

Just over a week ago a Caspian Airlines plane crashed minutes after take-off from Tehran, killing all 168 people on board.

“All the dead and injured people and passengers have been evacuated and the fire has been completely controlled,” the deputy governor of Khorasan province, Ghahreman Rashid, told state media.

“The plane… had a technical glitch,” television reports said, quoting the director of the public relations department at the Mashhad airport, who was identified by his surname Pirhandeh.

Iran, which has been under years of international sanctions hampering its ability to buy modern Boeing or Airbus planes, has suffered a number of aviation disasters over the past decade.

Its civil and military fleet is made up of ancient aircraft in very poor condition due to their age and lack of maintenance.

In the most deadly previous crash, 117 people on board another Russian-designed aircraft, a Tupolev, were killed when it crashed into snow-covered mountains in western Iran in 2002.

Yes its a bit strange on how people complain about certain things, this despite the fact these things were there long before they moved in next door!

Here in sunny Townsville we have a joint user RAAF/ Civvy airport.
The RAAF have been at the same site since before WW2.

Approximately 1km from the runway threshold is a small hill (just 100 or so meters left of centreline).
Now the hill is only 200ft tall and up until 15yrs ago was not “populated”.
The council in their wisdom allowed housing to be built on this hill.. lord knows why…

Now strangely enough, these people who buy these houses, are the first to whinge and constanly moan on TV, radio and in the newspapers that the “RAAF” CONSTANTLY TRAINS OVER THEIR HOUSES!!!

Seriously, is todays society so completely stupid?

I can recall back in 1990 sometime while i flew for the local parachute club in their C207 that the chief instructor got a call from the CAA saying they received a “noise” complaint about “our” aircraft.

The complaint was from a resident on top of yet another small hill, this one being close to the coast line and adorned with $1million dollar houses.

On take-off i would turn right as soon as i could as i didnt want to fly over the ocean in the event of engine failure as we didnt carry life jackets, so i always flew past that hill.

I simply told the parachute instructor “If that resident has an issue he can talk to me in person”. The CAA could not do anything to “compel” me to stay away from that hill, nor could ATC.

Recently however I was shocked to hear that a noise complaint was taken to court when 5 (yes 5) residents of our local island made consistant complaints agaisnt ONE particular float plane which did joy flights in the area.

The court case almost sent them into broke and somehow the court ruled the float plane was to have a smaller diameter prop installed in order to reduce engine noise on take-off????!!!

How on earth CAN A COURT RULE on a DESIGN CHANGE to an aircraft which degrades its climb performance??????

The husband and wife team had run out of money to fight the court ruling and were forced to buy another prop in order to continue their business…..

Later their plane had items stolen from it while it was tied to moorings….
Im disgusted that these sorts of people exsist around here.

Amazing how the thread is again gone completely away from the subject and turning into yet another “lets bag someone” to make us feel better….

Mods can you delete their essays and bring back the thread the way it was?

Back to the subject at hand……

It’s a real F-15, but that’s also far more than 100 meters. Nevertheless, very impressive although it didn’t have CFTs.

I hardly think its “much” further then 100m, take off occured in 10sec of brake release.

You have to remember that it would only be carrying enough fuel for the display and a small reserve. No CFTs also means less weight…

Another one, what is going on

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Iran-Passenger-Jet-Crashes-In-North-West-Iran/Article/200907315338369?lpos=World_News_Carousel_Region_2&lid=ARTICLE_15338369_Iran_Passenger_Jet_Crashes_In_North_West_Iran

Oddley enough… it always seems to some form of cycle when it comes to airline disasters? (Not just in threes!)

There will be a period of a few yrs and no major crashes… Then suddenly a couple will occur around the world.

Sometimes though im sure the media doesnt report major accidents because its in some obscure place and cant be bothered?

I was surprised at how roomy the cockpit was compared to the Mirage!

Stealthy or not…. I still shudder everytime someone posts pictures of that flying barrel.

No pilot in the world (as they are a vein bunch) would ever consider sitting in what has to be one of the ugliest designs of the modern jet era? Least of all fly in it….

    Its hideous….. my eyes… my eyes…

But yes… good payload and good vis from such a high seat…
2nd seat in the back for an observer? Armed FAC?

You gotta admit that it is a wonderful design and looked very “futuristic”….

The aircraft is just a static model??

I mean they made new build Me262s recently, why not the Horton?
Im sure someone out there have a big fat wad of money I guess!

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Germans had?/ were developing radio controlled flying bombs as far back as WW1. They were to be released from airships….
