The RAAF is not going to get Flankers from Russia under any conditions! (i.e. moot point!)
Hello???? Is anyone reading ANY of the previous posts?
The Su-30 series was on THE SHORT LIST with 3 other aircraft back in 1999 when suddenly the whole tender process was dropped and we opted for the F-35 when it was NEVER offered to the RAAF.
The politics would not allow the purchase of Russian or Chinese Fighters. Besides why buy inferior equipment………..
Inferior products from Russia?? Suggest you do some research…
Jim mate the short list consisted of the Rafale, Typhoon, SU-30 series and i think a version of the F-15(k)?
All of this was suddenly dropped and made hush hush and never reported again.
The Su-30 deal also included a licencing deal which would enable us to build and sell them to.
This is probably gonna wreck Boeing’s Malaysian SH tender too…..ah who cares? Viva Su-30MKM follow-on order!!
Aussies to weigh-up Russian warplanes? Who’d have thought it…..
Ahh gees how many times do i have to say this….. the Su-30 series was offered to Australia as early as 1998… It was on the short list to replace the Hornet when the whole tendering process was abandoned and the aussie government decided to buy into the F-35

The last fixed wing aircraft we did that with was the Mirage lllO. With that in mind Rafale might be the way to go after all.
“””One day, Australia will buy Russian, and the time is sooner than later. Could you believe that Saudi Arabia is buying Russian T-90 tanks. A purchase ,one would vehemently deny some years ago. In sofar as Russian has signed a deal to buy Australian Uranium, the same could have been said of Australia buying something Russian– times are changing.”””
Hmmm i did post before about this….
The Su-30 series was on the shortlist to replace the Hornet and F-111
Pioneer theres no point in trying to tell them….
They are all deluded into believing what some French article tells them about whata going on in Australia.
The Tigre is not operationally ready … its just reached IOC a few months ago.
We have a NEW government…
And we have a new Defence Minister who is examining ALL the stuff ups and wasted BILLIONS in crap defence procurements which shouldve been shelved.
It doesn’t really matter what an aussie tells them…. they rather believe someone who lives in France.
I have 3 things to say.
If the plan is to pull away from the US, then buy all the new planes from your new “best friends”.
It really is as simple as that.
How so??
When we operated Mirages were we Frances allie??
Are you saying that if we buy from ANY other source apart from the USA then we should sever ties with them??
You sound like a child who is stamping his feet because the other kids wont play you?
Gee wizz the RAAF bought planes from Airbus…
The Army operates the Tiger and have dropped the Blackhawk finally for the MRH90….
So what if we dont buy from the USA???
You buy what suits your requirements… not to line the pockets of your so-called friends.
The JSF deal is another sore point…. It was also NEVER offered to the RAAF.
Someone mentioned the F-22 is also not on offer…. this doesnt prove anything.
The JSF “deal” was the biggest con in Australian defence procurement history.
The orginal RFP was suddenly dropped …. 4 aircraft were on the short list to replace the F-18…
The Rafale, Typhoon, Su-30 series, and one other aircraft which i cant recall.
Suddenly it was all dropped and the government announces we are getting the JSF….. WHICH WAS NEVER ON OFFER….
And yes the Su-30 was really offered to the RAAF (with western avionics)…. included in the package was a licence arrangement so we could manufacture and sell them here if need be.
“”Not with only 9 out of 22( would like to see this number brought up to 30+. how many could we send 3? and they are not fully tested yet. Last i heard the goverment has held payment over till promblems have been worked out.””
None… thats how many we are sending!!
Some French article talks about what another country is supposedly doing and you all believe it????
There is NO DEPLOYMENT. They only just reached IOC.
Until the NEW Australian Government announces anything why the heck are you even discussing some fantasy????
Believe it when its offcially announced, by the country of origin.
So the French reveal “Aussie” tigers will be deployed before the Australian government tells everyone???
Oh come on….. (In case you all live in a bubble… we now have a new government here.)
There has been no media release from Defence or even a hint from the media here that the Tigers will go anywhere in a hurry.
And yes.. they are classified as “Armed Recon. Helos”. Their main purpose was to replace the 30yr old JetRangers which were of Vietnam vintage!
Below is an old pic from 2005 during trials, with a hellfire loaded

A nasa demonstrator????
Er… nasa got it when General Dynamics had retired it to the desert.
“”I have a couple of questions concerning the Australian NH-90s.
1. whats the deal with them replacing the Blackhawk? The Blackhawk isn’t THAT old,and as a troop/utility transport,is above average in my book.Is it just a local preferance? I do know they picked the European designed Tigre over the Apache,so the NH90 replacing the Blackhawk would make sense if they were just going to go with Europe as their defense supplier. “”
Well as was explained…. yes the Blackhawk IS OLD and expensive to run.
The whole fleet has had numerous fixes due to cracking and living in harsh/ hot/ salt air environments. There is no local preference…. You buy what suits your needs. And the NH90 will increase the Army airlift capability simply because its a bigger helicopter.
“”2. Once they are replaced, what are the Aussies planning on doing with them? maybe sell them back to Sikorsky like Hong Kong did? “”
Not all the Blackhawks will be retired when the NH90 comes in… as the NH90 was not really meant to be a blackhawk replacement. More a supplement to the Chinook/ Blackhawk. The Blackhawk was found to be a poor outsized load carrier as well. Which is why the Chinook were brought back into service. The NH90 will also be able to operate off the new “frigates?” as well.
Just looking through the entire thread for the first time.
Fantastic work from everyone! Fantastic stuff….
I worked as an AME in a previous life and i actually enjoyed whenever i was given any sheet repairs or had to manufacture panles/ brackets etc….
You have given me inspiration for future projects i think! If only i win the lottery in the meantime!
On a similar note, I can recall reading an American Flying magazine in the mid 1990s. A company there offered cockpit sections (from the front firewall back) fully rebuilt or basically any aircraft which was available from those Avizona bone yards.
they came with working panel lights and cockpits seats and if memory serves me correctly… a removable writing table, as these were to be “home office” furniture.
Look forward to seeing more on here…..

Australia
Are we talking in a modern scenario? or a flashback??
Several problems arise…
As far as i know no one makes any 1500HP piston engines… liquid cooled or otherwise.
A company called Orenda made several V twins, but to be honest i dont know if they still make them anymore… and i only knew of an 800HP version as their biggest engine….
Next…. the pysical size and weight of a 1500HP engine would destroy any weapon carrying capability… why waste 600kg in weight, when for the same power from a PT-6 turbine you can save 450KG and carry more payload??
Next…. AVGAS is shortly to be discontinued …. so it would need to be a diesel engine……. This again leads to the problem that no one makes any 1500HP diesel are engines….
Couple this to the fact that most military aircraft mechanics would look at a piston engine and scratch their heads as none of them would have probably ever worked on one….
In order to design and certify it would run into the millions…..
As for IR signature…… A cast iron piston engine with glowing hot red exhaust stacks beats the IR signature of any given turbine….
A turbine also offers smoother characteristics over any piston engine. Avionics and weapon aiming would all suffer very heavly from the vibrations of a piston engine aircraft….. not to mention pilot comfort.
I was told the same thing JA….. This is why the C-27 visited Townsville….
As 38SQN is moving here …… and we have these loverly little birds based here…..
The C-27 demo. managed a stop in Townsville the other day.
Its a bit bigger then i thought it was…
Happy belated Birthday Ja…
Im kicking myself so hard…. as i had the oppourtunity to go to avalon all expenses paid!
Other commitments meant i didnt get to go……
However… i did notice the C-27 demonstrator dropped into Townsville yesterday….. as they will hopefully be based here once the replace 38SQn Caribous…..
I have seen videos on google and youtube….. Blackwater useing CASA212s with side firing heavy cal machine guns…. Blackhawks…. in IRAQ…. and Mi-8 in Afghanistan…
Hardly what i call sporting…… private companies with armed aircraft just is not right…..
