Nothing to do with this thread… or planes…. but as an aussie im sad to report that the croc hunter Steve Irwin was killed today while filming a documentary in far north Queensland. He was apparantly hit in the chest by a stingray barb.
🙁
The F-111 was chosen for one specific task. (which was later revealled after many year under the secrecy act.)
At the time the F-111 was the only choice we could afford. And it also carried 2 crew…… A 2 crew environment is required for this particular mission…..
The specific task was for a aircraft to fly unrefuelled to Indonesia from Darwin. The aircraft was to carry one weapon of choice preferably inside a weapons bay, leaving the aircraft free to carry external fuel. Weapon of choice need not be mentioned as i assume everyone knows what im talking about.
The USA refused to sell us, should we ever had asked for it that particular weapon.
10 years late probably meant that there would have been a rethink about our closest neighbour and the consent switching would have been removed upon delivery as we deemed by the USA not allowed to ‘certain’ weapons…..
This was the only reason we bought them….. in the end… they arrived too late…and we were deemed unworthy by the USA to become a “super power”….
Gun camera footage from the Mirage ????
How low can you go ???? Who siad a Canberra was boring….

More Hornet weapons combo…..

More Mirage mania…..

And not really an aircraft….. but it does fly…and it was part of the RAAF…
Bloodhound missile 1963……

I actually tried downloading this a few days back… none of the download links seem to be working???
Hmmm i’ll have to look in online at the computer at work for those…..
The ones i have only show Mk82 and Mk 82 retarded bombs attached to wing tanks..
As for ECM…. can’t say i recall ever seeing one….

This picture im not too sure if they are Mk-82, as i enlarged the picture for a close look but really can’t tell….
“I thought it was AVGAS?? “
ALways good to have access to a large library of pictures!
More Mirage Mania….
Can anyone tell me what the colour scheme was for ??? All i got with the file was that it was for a Jubilee in 1981 ?? SQN jubilee ??

I do have some photos of the F-111 and F-4 together….. but not on this computer. Im sure though that the current F-111 crews probably do love their pig as much as the F-4 was loved.
Mirage mania…..
Butterworth….

Still cant get over those attachments on wing tanks…..

Going back the previous Hornet pic i posted loaded with Asraams and Amraams… how about 2 of them fully loaded ??
And not its not a photoshop pic either….

Beautiful pic of the Sabe over the Melbourne Cricket Ground……

It was very popular with its crews…..

For most of the pilots approaching the Phantom for the first time, first impressions would have been the same- the size of the aircraft and its distinctive appearance. It was an aggressive looking aeroplane, very business like, but with pieces of the airframe seemingly pointed in wrong or unusual directions…..
For those who had previously flown the Mirage III, the Phantom offered a marked comparison – it looked like a tank and the cockpit was incredibly spacious and well laid out, in contrast to many european types…..
The Phantom was a fabulous aeroplane. Equally effective in a number roles, it was perhaps unfortuneate that the RAAF didn’t exploit its capabilities as a fighter, but for a pilot who flew the Mirage and F-111 as well, the Phantom was the best workhorse of the lot – reliable and strong with very few limits and when operated in the normal way, delightful to fly….
Definately the most useful fighter/bomber ever operated by the RAAF – without peer, in fact !
Also in the same book it was reported that in Febuary on 1971 an F-4 was overstressed to 10Gs ! The engines were removed from the aircraft for overhaul….
Another F-4 was lost with crew in June of 1971 near Evens Heads.

The Phantoms arrived in Sept. and Oct of 1970 and returned 2 years and one month later to the USA. The Phantom which over ran the runway pictured above took 11months to rebuild.
The SUU-20 was probably actually the most common item seen hanging from the Aussie F-4, next would be the triple ejector racks and MK82s , and the cargo pod.
As it figured these guys were to be flying the F-111 soon there probably wasnt much point in checking everyone on the Sparrow. Basically i think it was just to keep the crews flying and give them some basic gunnery/ bombing skills and to work in a 2 crew environment.
Back to the Hornet….
Rarely seen picture of Hornet weapons…

More on the Phantom…

Ouch…. crash at Amberly….. plane was rebuilt and took quite a while too!

I could honestly spend days and counless rolls of film there…. If i ever make it!
Got any more pics???
