Here are some pictures I’ve made of the aircraft at Kleine Brogel after finishing their display at the Sanicol air show 😀

Fact is that F-15s and F-14s are becoming old planes. They were designed at the end of the sixties. About ten to fifteen years this will be also for the F-16s and early F/A-18s.

It is planned that 14 Agusta A.109 (which belongs to the Air Component since 2004) will be placed in storage (including the examples damaged by storm during the KFOR deployment in Kosovo). Also a dozen Alouette IIs will be stored at Zutendaal (10km form here 😀 )

Nice pics there mate, tell me, do the A-109’s ever get used in the AT role any more?

An amount of A.109 helicopters are used for the AT role (initially 28 were configured for this role, but some have received rocket launchers and are used in the CAS role). Next to these you have some scout/liaison helicopters which are configured as medevac helicopters and armed scout (with MAG 7.62 machine gun at the doors).
Some A.109 are stored in the Attrition Distribution Centre at Zutendaal.

    That is a german UH-1D, right ??

It’s indeed an UH-1D of the Heeresflieger. The Belgians do not have an utility helicopter of that class (yet). For the fast roping demonstration a helicopter with a door on each side was required, and the Germans were willingly to offer a helicopter and crew for the Belgian Defence Days.

Bad choice. Belgian F-16’s, even the ones which were recently placed in storage, are near the end of their service life. If Bulgaria wants used F-16’s, it would make more sense to go for American F-16’s, they should be able to find many which were flown much less than Belgian ones.

The Belgian F-16s which are stored at Weelde are not at the end of their service life, but they were declared surplus after the Cold War. True, they are the oldest aircraft in the inventory, but they each have lower flying hours than the now operational F-16s. A few of the (recently) stored F-16s have received the MLU upgrade, which means they have the capabilities of Block 50/52. However, most of the stored F-16s have received only the Carapace upgrade, but not the MLU upgrade. Remember, the Belgian F-16s were the second choice of the Czech Air Force, while the US F-16As and F-16Bs were the less preferred Czech choice… The first choice of the Czechs were new JAS-39 Gripens…

In 1994 Portugal receive 17 F-16A and 3 F-16B, but now we have 19(16A and 3B) of the original 20(we lost one F-16A in a training exercise in June 2002), and one MLU.
The second batche are 25 F-16 A/B, only 21 will be upagrade to MLU standards, 20 to form a new squadron and one to replace the one lost in 2002. The other 4 will be for spares.
MLU with AMRAAM, JDAM, and there are some news about JSOW. Yes, Corsairs did use AGM-65, if I’m not mistaking, they used AGM-65B.

The Portuguese AF is participating regularly in several exercises and courses, like TLP 2004/3 @ Florennes… , and is therefore a well equipped professional air force…
