A quick look on the nose of Sally B will show where they are used!!!

Knew I’d seen it somewhere – until I read your post I was going with Dakota….
Great to see – a fine tribute to a remarkable group of people.
I’m glad from other people’s replies that we’re not alone in this endeavor ๐
Out of all those I’ve seen so far, the one which impressed me the most (in terms of the freindly reception we recieved) was XM655 at Wellesbourne – we met some really friendly people and were treated to a tour of the cockpit and flight deck.
It looks like you had good weather for your โVulcan Visit!โ
On the repainting side itโs being roller-finished โ oh for a building to allow spraying!
For other Vulcan fans out there I hear tell that a few members of the public will be attending this trial presentation next weekend ๐ โ if things work out it could become a โregularโ activity at NAM! Also donโt forget the other V-Force items featured here!
Cheers for your reply!
We absolutely loved our visit to Newark Air Museum (we dropped in on the second leg of a drive home to Cambridge from Inverness). It’s a very impressive place, and an ‘hour to spare’ drop-in visit turned into a 4 hour extravaganza after which we decided that we would have to come back and do it propely another time. It really is a full day out.
I also spent nearly ยฃ50 in the shop which I’d not intended to do: there are some really good value books on offer among a lot of other stuff.
I’m thinking of nipping up this weekend for the presentation, with the hope that I might get a cockpit tour of XM 594. That would be pretty special, too.
Cheers for now…
Signed and forwarded to friends and family….
The best of luck to you!
I’m also very sad to hear this news, I camped at both air displays this year and at the second was lucky enough to be invited to marshall the General Aviation aircraft that landed for the day. This not only meant that I got to speak to all the pilots but also got uninterrupted access to Air Side during the day. Quite a privilege really.
Rougham was a super event for a number of reasons, perhaps principally for its ‘L’ shaped flight line which allowed aircraft to perform a more interesting display than at other places. This gave some great photo opportunities.
I wonder if it’s worth finding out who made the decision and writing to them, asking them to reconsider – you never know!
What a loss to our Summer calendar ๐
I live just down the road in Fulbourn and although I’m well aware that there was an airfield at Bottisham (having WWII airfields in your village seems almost to go hand in hand with living in that bit of Cambridge: Oakington, Waterbeach, Bottisham, Duxford….. etc.) I didn’t know that there was a museum on the site.
Sadly I shall be in Inverness on the 25th (Shocking timing I know!) but wondered if there’s another way I can show my support – is there a petition I could sign, or perhaps write a letter to the Councillor in question?
Good luck with it and do keep us posted with info.

Actually some those shots really show how murky it was at times on Sunday. I had a pair of OAPs with me (my grandfather was on the desk all morning in the Land Warfare Hall with two other Burma Star Veterans) and sadly we all got soaked during the Yak display and had to head home. Top marks to the Yak Pilots – I’ve no idea how they did their display in those conditions.
My partner and I got changed into dry clothes and came back during the Swordfish display – good job we did actually because the late evening light was really great for photography.
Cheers for posting them up!
PS if you’re considering a lens upgrade, you might do a lot worse than one like this – I picked one up a little while ago for my Canon 600D and it’s not far off L-Series Lens quality and not bad for most Aircraft shots. That particular one’s about as much as you’d want to spend on one – mine was nearer ยฃ120 which I think was a good price.

Nice pics – of a CP140!
Well – I learnt something there – you’re right, not an Orion as I first said. I’ve changed the original post to confuse anyone who opens this thread ๐
Cheers!
Cheers for the positive feedback folks!
That MK IX Spitfire replica was a very easy subject to photograph, I just wish it could have been in slightly more appropriate surroundings though.
It’s based not all that far from home though so with any luck I’ll get a few more chances.
Rougham’s great because you can get access to the aircraft during the evening and early where lots of other venues would be closed. It’s always the conventionally ‘difficult’ lighting situations that give the best HDR results.
Another bonus was the ‘Spirit of Kent’ Spitfire, as the best aerobatic display of the day.
I can’t resist adding my shiny B17 shot…
Steven
You’re absolutely right about the Spirit of Kent, I’ve never heard a spitfire howling through the sky like a mustang – I assume that it’s for the same reason of air fushing over the gun ports. Either way it was just the most amazing display. Rougham’s ‘L’-shaped flight line really adds to the pilots’ creativity.
The B-17 has to be one of the easiest aircraft to photograph at air displays – always extremely shiny, moves slowly and fills the view-finder even when quite a long way off!!
I love your shot of the Stearmans; I find multiple biplanes very difficult to photograph but that picture makes them look superb.
Cheers…
Last time I looked that was Marinell… unless I’ve put the wrong cowlings on the aircraft….
Great pics and thanks for sharing.
Damn it! Wrong picture… Thanks for pointing it out – I’ve updated the caption now to confuse all who read these two posts in the future ๐
Cheers!
Here are a few more from the weekend.
You can see a gallery of all Rougham images that I’ve uploaded here, and a few selected ones are below. It was a great selection of aircraft!

Thanks to the USAF – But should they really have the afterburners on? Not that I’m complaining!!

Cheers for sharing Steven – I was there both days this year and really enjoyed the Mustang/Sally B display and the impromptu visit by the second Spitfire, particularly. Actually the C47 Dakota was another highlight, that’s the biggest aircraft to land on Rougham’s runway for many years.
I was lucky enough to be involved with marshalling the visiting aircraft as they came in on both days and as a perk of doing this, had access air-side and an uninhibited view of much of the display. As a result of this I got a reasonable video of the C-47 taking off as the two Steermans are taxi-ing out. There are quite a few other aviation-themed videos on my YouTube account if that’s your bag.
Here are a few of my stills from the weekend:

A tricky moment for the P-51 but recovered nicely…

A welcome and unexpected visitor…
