Well, he’s banned from WIX so hasn’t anywhere else to play at the moment.
Mmmm figures!
I have to agree, the wings are the wrong shape for a start. Here’s the Shuttleworth Collections example for comparison.
Planejunky,
No it wasn’t just roting away in some Museum it wa on outside display as Dave Burke at Lackland AFB TX which is a very dry climat. Have had the chance to visit the aircraft a few times before the big Steal 😡 the aircraft was in better counditin then alot of the stuff that DX has sitting outside.
This is still a very sore subject with alot of folks here in the States, alot of us feel that if they could build a Fiberglass copy for Lackland then why not just send Duxford the Copy make one for Lackland and then seel or trade the 24 to the Warbird Community. This 24 was the last 24 in USAF service used as a Weather Bird.
RER
Christ, who rattled his cage? 😡 I’ve just remembered why I don’t post here much anymore!
Thanks David, I couldn’t remember all the details, seems like ages ago now! 😀
Hi Dave,
No it wasn’t flown in, in fact it stood at a museum in the States for many years literally rotting away! The Lib was shipped to Duxford, and the work carried out on this airframe is a testament to Duxford’s conservation team, a first class piece of work! You’re right in saying it wasn’t there in 93, it went on display in the American Air Museum in 2003.
You mean like this then? This was from her “Pearl Harbor” filming days.
(Sorry, don’t have a credit for the photo :()
Pearl Harbor….AGHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RF codes= 303 (Kosciuszko) Sqn a Polish Squadron NOT American.
Eagle Squadon insignia= Should be on cowling not the tailfin.
Eagle Sqns= First Eagle Sqn was 71 formed on 19th September 1940 thus saw the later stage of the Battle of Britain, flying Hurricanes NOT Spitfires. The other two Eagle Squadrons were formed after the BoB.
Hollywood= A load of t0ssers that wouldn’t know historic accuracy if it smacked them between the eyeballs!!!! 😡
But I will forgive BM597 as she is a wonderful machine and one of my faves too, especially as she’s been returned to her Polish markings! 😉
Sorry it’s late, happy belated birthday Peter. I hope it was good one! 🙂
It’s not just the security thing.
The guys at Mildenhall rotate on a three year posting by and large.
This means that by 2005 there is nobody left on base who has any experience at all of organising such a mammoth undertaking.
Previously, new guys would join the team and work under the chaps who’d been junior organisers for previous show. Experience was handed down directly.
Now, it would almost be a case of starting from scratch. You have to ask yourself if anybody could be bothered.
Moggy
Couldn’t agree more Moggy, I think in our heart of hearts we all know Air Fete is now dead. Pessimistic? Perhaps, but look at what’s been happening in the US where USAF shows resemble an airport check in, where you can’t take camera bags over a certain size, cool boxes are off limits in case of exploding sandwiches, and the car parking……….
Now bring all that to sleepy Mildenhall, and how many of us would seriously want to go thorough all that hassle anyway? I haven’t been to RIAT since 1998 because of the hassle it takes to get there and park, plus in my view (and many others) it’s simply too big to do in a day, and two days would need a very nice bank manager to pay for it! The powers that be would (understandably) require Mildenhall to park all traffic off-base, and the searches would probably be a repeat of the shambles of RIAT 2002, not a nice thought.
It’s now time to let Air Fete rest and remember the many good years we had at the show.
I’m very sorry to hear of this accident, but very pleased that both pilots are safe. First accident in 15 years of operations is a very impressive safety record, and typical of the professionalism of the RAAF.
Norwich 2000
Quite a nice line up what with the Invader, vampire, Meteor Mustang formation but…
very little static even the Cessna 172 I arrived in went on static! the stalls were miles from the flight line and the display was very disjointed, with acts displaying between scheduled flights.
LOL, thanks for reminding me, yes Norwich 2000 was simply awful!! The Commentary was provided by some local radio DJ who knew bu*ger all about aeroplanes. The RAF got so naffed off with the organisers, the Tornado’s left while we were waiting in traffic, never to return!
I seem to remember that trade stalls were not only miles from the flight line, they were also miles from each other for reasons of “fire safety”!
I’ve never known a place like it you arp on about aviation and most yet most threads lose the plot by page 1 and wot starts as info sharing ends an argument of whos right and who’s wrong.
I totally agree my friend.
I don’t post here much these days for exactly that reason, and for what it’s worth I know a few others that won’t post either for the same reasons. To many outsiders this forum doesn’t come across as a friendly place to hang out, in fact at times it’s quite the opposite and puts many off becoming members.
Usernamechanged, I think that BBMF watch is superb, and if I had the money I’d have it off yer wrist in an instant! 😀
We bought a Minolta Dimage Z1 after Flying Legends, and took it to Old Warden, Chicago, and the Autumn show at Duxford. This is one impressive camera considering the price. 😉
Self serving Eurocrats that tell us all that the Euro, and total integration into the EU is “inevitable”! 😡 No way do I want my kids growing up in a country where they feel they have no say, and are forced to live by laws created by people that they didn’t have a chance to elect! 😡 😡
as for operational Mustangs, i.e. carrying colors into combat, I think the 356th FG is neat:

Love that picture, that’s given me a great idea for a model diorama! I live only six miles from Martlesham Heath, and would be very interested to know where on the airfield that picture was taken. 😉
I do like the 55th FG markings, “Mille G”, “Miss Veronica” etc, but I also really like the 353rd, and of course the 78th FG’s B/W checkerboard. 🙂
I’ve just heard that this program has now been put back to January! 😮 🙁 It better be good after all this faffing about that’s all I can say. 😡
