I’ve just trawled through the G-INFO list of Spitfires, and have created a list of aircraft that are a bit of a mystery. Anyone have any further information on these?

    G-BXVI – XVI – RW386 – Wizzard Investments Ltd
    G-BRAF – XVIII – HS877 – Wizzard Investments Ltd – C of A Exp: 23/09/1993
    G-BYDE – IX – PT879 – Peter Teichman
    G-CBNU – F.IX – ML411 – Mervin Aldridge
    G- CDGU – Mk I – X4276 – Anthony Smith
    G-CDGY – Vc – EF545 – Aero Vintage
    G-MKIA – Mk I – P9374 – Spitfire Partners LLC, Italy
    G-PRXI – PR.XI – PL983 – Aircraft Restoration Co – C of A Exp: 11/06/2001

    CAA Unregistered Spitfires

    SX336
    TE311
    SM520

I understand that TE311 is at Coningsby, so would assume that it’s the one currently under restoration by the BBMF. Any details of mark, and owner for other two please, and a Mark for the BBMF project?

Is PP972 for the UK or an overseas customer?

    Cheers

Ahhh, but did it really happen, conspiracy theories are quite good. http://www.apfn.org/apfn/moon.htm

Just playing devils advocate 😉 :diablo:

Given the political climate of the time, added with the fact Russia was winning the space race, now add in the fact that America was desperate to put one in the eye of those “nasty Ruskies” to save face, the possibility that it was staged cannot be totally discounted. Those photo’s were strange, and was the retouch made to try and make them look believable, or fake?

Unless you were aboard the Apollo craft heading for the moon, we’ll never truly know if it really happened or not! 😉

It did indeed but ‘airworthy/resting’ may now be a more accurate description.

You’re right, I understand they had to give her a little TLC before leaving for Duxford. 😉 I thought OFMC were going to operate it?

Back to these six other restorations, any ideas anyone?

I agree this is the most problematic part of the excercise. The chap that wrote the supplement was Peter Arnold I recall, you may have met him. He decided to sub-divide the term ‘airworthy’ in to different catergories and I think this was a good idea. However since then some of the aircraft in the airworthy/resting catergory (for example NH238) have not been active in over fourteen years and their inclusion as true airworthy examples may now have to be reviewed simply due to the passing of time requiring increasingly more effort and time to return an aircraft to flight.

Yep I remember it, it was a very good supplement. We have included TE184 as airworthy, rather than resting as it flew into Duxford not so long ago. 😉

I think you missed about six.

    Mark

Ok, but where are they? I think I recall reading somewhere that the BBMF have one as an on going project?

TE566 is indeed under re-build. We had contact about two years ago from one of the guys involved with the project as they were looking for a header tank.

We only include active restorations in the UK only, so the three we list as under restoration are: (sorry a quick revision as I missed one! 😮 )

    LFVb JG891 Historic Flying Ltd
    XIVc RM689 Rolls Royce
    Mk 1 AR213 Personal Plane Services/Sheringham Aviation

Resting is NH238 at North Weald, it’s C of A expired in 1993!

Any other restorations, we would like to know about so they can be added to our directory. We will need mark, serial, and location. 😉

Our UK directory currently holds 21 Spitfire’s flying with 2 actively under restoration, and one resting. These figures are just for the UK, as for the rest of the world, I’ll pass that to someone else! 😉

I have a Minolta Dimage Z1, it’s not bad, but not up to the standard of the “Hubble space telescope” boys! 😀

    Here’s a pic I took at Legends.

Hopefully I’ll be working over there this weekend, so if pics can be taken, I’ll get them! 😉

Very nice shots Mike! I’d tried looking for spads on G-INFO but none came up, so I didn’t know if any were under restoration.

My visit to Old Warden at the weekend got me thinking that we should be including these old machines in our directory. Originally we just covered WWII machines, but we’re now starting to include classic jets, and thought we may as well go the other way too! 😉

That’s great thanks guys. I’m just adding some new sections in the warbird directory at http://www.ukwarbirds.net so assistance with some of the more obscure items is very helpful, thanks! 😉

Just out of interest, are there any Spads out there?

That’s superb news, I saw enough Phatoms cut up for scrap whilst I was at Wattisham in 1992/3 at least XV408 won’t suffer that indignity. 🙂

Sounds typical of the government. 😡

The Americans hypocracy and paranoia never ceases to amaze me, if they’re that worried about it being used as a weapon, why do they still sell F-16’s to Pakistan, and the Middle East? :dev2: That jet is a dead duck, it’ll never fly again anyway, so what’s the harm in letting a museum have it, after all Duxford has one!

Couldn’t agree more Mr Jeepman, I bet they couldn’t say that about RIAT! 😀
