Edzell put a unique Seafire 47 back into the air – a type/mark of aircraft that never flew with any US military organisation…. I don’t see why this Tempest II should’nt fly too. It’s a +400mph warbird with excellent pedigree. If we’re going to see a Tempest fly ever again, it’ll probably be this one!

I look forward to reading it….. I’ll do you a swap for a copy of my Hornet book then!! 😉
Hi guys, since I know a good portion of you are/have been engineers in your life, I thought id post my question here
What careers in aviation engineering are available? I.E licences for engineering (as i know none) im big on airframes (classic aircraft too?) ideally id like to end up being someone that owns/runs a business in classic aircraft service and restoration
Im 21 i have good Gcse’s and 3 A levels including chemistry and physics, university really isnt for me and I want to do something like an apprenticeship that would give me a practical job at the end of training
help please? its very confusing 🙁
Cheers in advance
Ben
Hi Ben,
When I left school in 1989, I chose the college/university route to a job, and ended up with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. But at the same time, volunteered (and was occasionally paid) at my local airfield for hands on experience. At the time I left school there was a big recession and no apprenticeships around. I’d have preferred the apprenticeship with hindsight, but then the degree has opened up a whole lot of opportunities I may never have seen.
Whichever your choice, do something you enjoy, as you’ll be making a long term commitment to it, and it will have to pay the bills too!
Try Marshalls, BAE Systems, the RAF, etc.
My hands-on experience over the years has included being a Formula One engine builder, machinist, welder, Carbon fibre chassis designer/builder, and Historic Aircraft restorer. Try and learn as many skills as you can, as it’ll make you a better engineer in the long run.
Good luck.
More questions. Attached are images of further spade grips – my latest aqusitions. First appears to be Hawker Biplane but with a modification. Specific type, or just a general mod? Second I assume to be Sea Fury. Marked N270? Could this also be wartime Tempest? I’m also looking at a spade grip marked AH2040. Brass buttons but no brake lever attachments. Hurricane or just Harvard?
The D-Type grip shown here with this type of Guns/RP firing button was used on Mk22/24 Spitfires, Sea Furies, and Vampire F1-FB9. This looks a very nice example.
With a slightly altered switch fit, it was also used on Meteor T.7’s and the Gannet.
Petition support duly made!
Anon,
Good luck with this. Its certainly an exciting prospect to see another F8 get a full restoration, especially as you intend to get things running again.
…. just wished I lived closed to lend a hand!
Mosquito FB.6 – Grandad worked on these with 515 Squadron.
ARCO Blenhiem
Won’t it be lovely to see the ARCO Blenhiem flying as a MK1!! 🙂
Many of the RAF aircraft (and hence their colours) they had on strength on the eve of WW2 are sadly absent from the skies.
A formation of the following would be nice:
Mk1 Spitfire
Mk1 Hurricane
Mk1 Blenhiem
Gladiator
It would be great to be able to add a Battle to this list too.
Anyone else spotted the Tempest/Typhoon parts yet…..?
Jon
What these you mean? 😀
This is a Hawker Tempest BTW. You are looking at its front end. The Tempest frame is longer than the Typhoon one.
… So there is another mkV tempest cockpit lurking somewhere with the rear fuselage of the Indian MkII, and probably a new build chin radiator!
I was going to say that people have strated with less, but have they?
Well done for taking it on and hope it goes well for you.
Yes indeed…. 5 years ago, there was’nt a Hornet cockpit in existence! 😀
That’s been done from less…
I’m feeling sad its gone already, but its gone to a very good home.
I was being tongue in cheek with the ‘lazy’ thing, I know that it is far from it.
I was considering the Venom that was on EBay, and the pod sprung to mind with that project, however that would have lost a considerable amount of its identity in so doing.
Hi Pagen01
The Vampire FB5 pod is not compatible with the Venom FB1 or FB4. While the cockpit structure forward of the intakes is common between the two, the wing spar lugs are in different positions, and the intake hole woodwork is a different shape.
From a draftsmans perspective, ships and boats were designed in “lofts”. Each part was drawn out full size, using “lofting lines”.
Before the advent of fully 3 Dimensional CAD in aircraft design, these were also designed on the same basis, with the aircrafts shape being designed/recorded using plots of lofting lines.
On a lighter note, now being fairly familiar with the Short Stirling’s “belt and braces” structure as I’m helping the Stirling Project, this aircraft goes beyond sharing terminology with ships…. I actually think some parts are from ships! 😀
Just the one for me!
DH Hornet
I’d love to find another!
