Well thank goodness that the airframe is adapable to a few different makes of engine, otherwise seeing a Sea Fury in the air would be a very-very rare thing…. and hat’s off to the Americans who made the conversions.
Delighted to hear there is no duplication of effort as I’m in awe of the work being undertaken to create the front end of a Stirling and look forward to seeing every update. Can’t wait to see frames being erected!
What happened to the ‘Stirling wing’ at Orfordness, the story suddenly went quiet possibly for good reason?
I’d love to visit but don’t find myself over that side of the country very often, maybe soon..
Keep up the good work.
It is being investigated. We are waiting to see the outcome, but on first sight of the structural pictures it looks more Lancaster than Stirling.
“almost as silly as two projects creating the front end of a Stirling”
Hi NeilH,
While it may seem that way from the outside, there is no duplication of efforts. Both have co-operated over the years, and there are more than enough parts and resources to go around. Its not like we each have half of a bank note 😉 useless without the other…..
The Stirling Aircraft Project based in Cambridgeshire, is a registered charity, and has been going for ~20 years. It is regularly staffed twice per week by 3-4 volunteers, where some serious engineering efforts have been undertaken to restore and reproduce a forward fuselage and all of its detailed componentry. You are more than welcome to visit our workshop to view progress.
Martin, the collector in the south west of England has made some lovely displays, and has collected some nice original parts of Stirling remains.
Geographically, even a long drive between locations is enough to prevent working on the same project.
Hi Flyingblind,
Yes, somewhere I have a lh instrument panel drawing for a mosquito FB6. Send me a pm, and I will scan it.
Fouga – Regardless of its unique nature, £1,500 is a lot of money by anyone’s standards and that would buy a lot of kit for other preservation projects. So, I don’t think that saying that a particular museum would be ‘fools’ not to snap this up is very helpful.
Worth every penny in my view.
Hi brataccas,
There are only two complete Wellingtons at present.
The RAF Museum have one. It was on display in Hendon for years, but has recently been transported to their conservation site at RAF Cosford, where it is undergoing restoration work.
The second complete Wellington is at Brooklands Museum. This one was raised from the bottom of Loch Ness in the 80’s, and restored.
There are also two identifiable substantial wrecks of Wellingtons. One, L7775 is mostly at East Kirby, where its complete wing is on display, with its tail section at Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire. The other, Z1206 consists of the forward fuselage with the Midland Aircraft Recovery Group in Warwickshire.
Its really good to see a well preserved Vampire FB52 in a museum.
No Battle at Sywell, Bruntingthorpe, work is continuing away from public gaze!
Hi Ben,
You are correct. Sorry, got my Airfields mixed up!
Is the TT example on the list that was imported for restoration at Sywell?
Impressive achievement.
Does this have counter-rotating props, ie. one being a left hand tractor, and the other being a right hand tractor, in the same way as the Hornet’s 130 series Merlins?
If it does, are they rotating down towards the centre (like the Hornet) or upwards at the centre?
Hi David,
You mean this one?

Yep, that’s the one.
David,
Out of interest, are you after the earlier ‘Dunlop’ style or, the later ‘Dowty’ type handle?

Hi Martyn,
Sorry, I don’t know which maker, but the one I’m looking for has the angled, offset rectangular housing at the top containing the trigger. It’s quite a tall grip.
Does anyone have a Harrier GR3 grip available? Sale or Trade?
Hi Matt,
This is an excellent piece of work on your part. Well done for collating them all together, and spending the time to decode it all.
Hi. If anyone is interested in any of these new made rubber bobbins as fitted to the BFP anti vibration mounts then please pm me for further details

Hi Cornovii,
Please could you pm me with price and quantity available?
Thanks,
David
